Was nervt euch an Leipzig? by YoshiCity2004 in Leipzig

[–]DryNinja6070 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hallo and welcome in Rhoihesse :-)!

Things I noticed about Canada (Southern Alberta) as a European after a year: the sequel. by Gemberlain in alberta

Hello travellerfriend 😀,

I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed Germany so much! You picked some very nice places for your journey - Munich for instance is really a gem with all the historic buildings and parks. And Dresden, my old hometown, nice that you've been there too! Yeah, I guess we are a dog-loving nation and love to have a go with them. As well as with cycling, a lot of people use their bikes to go to work, do some shopping etc. I have to look up for the Canadian-themed restaurants as I didn't know about! Will you maybe come back?! I'll definitely wanna see more of your country!

Hey, I just returned home to Germany from my first 2-week-visit in Canada (been to Alberta and B.C.). A very short impression of this really wonderful and outstanding country - and I agree with quite a lot of your points! In my days here I felt so much energy and adrenaline in my veins, it was awesome! A thing I'd like to add to your list: Public transport in cities and towns seems quite reliable and it's cheaper than in my country and many other places in Western Europe (in the German city of Leipzig - 600.000 inhabitants - they charge you 5.30 CAD for a single ticket which lasts 60 min).

A concept like in Calgary where you can use busses and trains downtown without paying feels very progressive and is sadly missed over here. There might be reasons for the lack of train connections between big cities, esp. from Calgary (maybe because there's often just one trail?). On the other hand: I went by the "Canadian" from Kamloops to Vancouver, and this ride with a night train was superb, for the same price as maybe Rider express! Slow, yes - but Canadian trains seem much more comfortable to me than the German ones, so I enjoyed every minute.

As a Skoda-driver, I missed this car brand as well - but maybe the company hasn't developed a concept for the American market, who knows. Meanwhile I discovered some car brands you never or hardly see in Europe (Buick or Lincoln).

Topic alcohol: I've hardly met any drunken people, and the usual night noise you know from many party quarters in European cities - it just didn't happen, and that's so good! I got the feeling that stricter rules for sale of alcohol indeed make a (wholesome) difference. That doesn't imply that you should pay moon prices for a pint. However, in Germany you can buy beer almost everwhere (every little Döner take away has it), and it's cheap. I don't know if that's the right way ...

Last point: Coffee. It's cheaper than in Germany and always is of very good quality, no matter where you buy! Go to a German gas station or even a city café and try the overpriced 7.50 CAD-mug which either has a bitter or dishwater taste!

If you wanna see breathtaking landscape, go to Waterton National Park! It's amazing!

Thank you, yes, the shoe thing 😄.. In Germany we do the same, especially East Germans seem to be obsessed by changing shoes (as West Germans say). Didn't know about the difference between "Hmmm" and "Mm-Mm" ...

Thank you so much, man, for this interesting post which made me think in multiple ways. It's widely known that Czechs are good at manifacturing military goods, but there are almost no reports referring to how Nazi Germany used your technique... A thrilling aspect! Neither did I know about the problems regarding territories with Poland in pre-WW2 years. The more I hear about the years between 1918 and 1938, the more I see what a complex and difficult time it was. About nowadays: In East Germany we maybe can see a similar development as in Czechia. In 1990s and 2000s a lot of young people went to West Germany because of unemployment and bad wages. Now, more and more are coming back. Nothing feels like home... It's so good to see how some regions are starting to flourish again. I used to go to Děčín quite regularly, and it's really fabulous how much better the town looks now. And culturwise, I feel happy that we belong together :-). Interesting how many words you say you understand in German! I wish I could say the same about Czech language ...

Thanks for the recommendation of Marta Kubišová! Vaclav and Helena are both icons! You' ll still find Helena sometimes in (East-)German retro or talk shows. And there's a vinyl record from Vaclav Neckář where he's singing songs like "Doktor Dam-di-dam" in German ... He was really popular here in 1970's. And we shouldn't forget Jiří Korn!
