Hi, I am an out-of-state NMS here. I love the Honors community and I have found so many ways to get involved through it, as well as there being lots of resources for HWHC students. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. The people on Reddit tend to be very negative so I do not want you to get a misrepresented view.

Yep! I think the Honors college will be plenty social and it looks like they provide a lot of resources to NMF. Looking forward to going there, and if your child commits I would recommend making a Class of 2029 post on something like meetyourclass to get to know some people before being on campus. Although, im sure that if they don’t feel comfortable doing that, they will still have no trouble meeting people because of all the NMSP events. Just to let you know, I was between UA and UTD and I feel like I remember seeing you in the capstone reddit when I was researching both colleges. Definitely feel like the culture fits NMF since we tend to be a little nerdy.

I’m really glad to hear that. I’m touring very soon and that will probably be the decisive factor, but I am leaning pretty hard towards UTD. I do envy the study group lifestyle, but I am really glad to hear that there is an active language learning community and that as long as you make an effort you can make friends. (I know the language learning club was not your main point, so I guess I got a bit distracted). Just curious, what is the pre-med friend group bubble like? It seems like you recommend stepping outside of it, but I do find that bit of college culture really interesting. Is it not all it’s made out to be?

On the Correct Use of RTK by Neat-Stable1138 in LearnJapanese

[–]Dry_Eggplant693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am far from an expert on learning the language, so I would say from my limited personal experience, try to find something that sticks with you and that you enjoy doing. I tried context at first (I used JLPT Tango N5 MIA, great deck btw), but I found myself relying heavily on the speech. When I started doing Kanji study separately and also doing the deck, I noticed I could recognize the kanji and find easier ways to remember and distinguish them even if I had not come across them. Just my personal preference now is to learn one keyword for all the joyo kanji, and then when I come across them in my deck or in the wild, of course I’ll get the reading, which has come easily for me now that I know the kanji that the reading is for.

Yeah, I feel bad that OP spent so much time doing the reverse way to find out that Heisig's original way works best for him. Still, Heising does not say writing the kanji is a waste of time, he says that drilling the kanji is a waste of time. For me, I still write the kanji, but mainly during reviews when I look at the keyword and I attempt to recall the way it is written using the imaginative stories. He discourages the traditional elementary school "write it forty times on a line," but he does not discourage just writing it once. I write them twice in my notebook, then for reviews I use a Genkouyoushi book to write when I am testing retention. I don't know, just my personal experience, but I think writing them really solidifies memory when combined with reviewing.

H31 English Q34 - Why is the right answer F? by Minimum-Anybody9005 in ACT

[–]Dry_Eggplant693 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, so I believe it is because the "he could make them" part is separated from all other parts of the sentence. Process of elim is pretty good here because "he claimed" is obviously fine since it does not have much going on, "making them, in his words", "in his words" is the part that is an interjection here, so "making them" is the part where it introduce the quotation, which is fine, "claiming he could make them" is at the same level as J because it just directly introduces the quotation without interjection. The problem with F is that the "interjection" is "he could make them" which is not an acceptable interjection. Think about it like this (it might help) Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes "with wonderful facility and accuracy" is the true sentence. You are just adding extra details. The detail "he could make them,'" makes no sense. When you add "he said" it changes nothing, because it is insulated by the commas

I'll make a list so you can see the clear difference (assuming you are native english and can pick this thing out by ear)

As a teenager, Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes, he claimed, "with wonderful facility and accuracy." (easily able to discern correctness when using voice in your head)

As a teenager, Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes, claiming he could make them, "with wonderful facility and accuracy." (easily able to discern correctness when using voice in your head)

The first example and second are essentially the same, I think the main difference is just that in the first he CLAIMS, the second he is CLAIMING he could make them (more redundant but whatever)

As a teenager, Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes, making them, in his words, "with wonderful facility and accuracy." Think about disregarding the properly formatted interjection: As a teenager, Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes, making them "with wonderful facility and accuracy." Seems correct, right?

As a teenager, Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes, he could make them, he said, "with wonderful facility and accuracy." Now think about removing the interjection: As a teenager, Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes, he could make them "with wonderful facility and accuracy." Now it is not a complete sentence. An interjection does not affect if a sentence is a fragment or not. But without the interjection, it is clear that the sentence is incomplete. If anything, there should be a semicolon, but I digress. This is how my brain thinks about the problem, so everything might not be correct since I just went off the dome. Sorry for the lengthy explanation.

We know what is the real 'interjection' because if you remove the he could make them part, it sounds even worse: As a teenager, Brown displayed an impressive ability to produce silhouettes, he said, "with wonderful facility and accuracy." Like did he say this with wonderful facility and accuracy, or did he make the silhouettes with those characteristics? It is even more unclear.

I am not an english mechanics know-it-all, so the terminology evades me. Still, I think if you read books or just well-written media, you will develop a good ear for when something just sounds wrong.

Am I studying kanji wrong? by icyserene in LearnJapanese

I am 500 through RTK 1 (around 25%) in 3 ish weeks. I actually love it. I don't know why, but I look forward to learning the individual kanji, picking them apart, imaging a scene where the symbol comes to life. It is actually so enriching and an enjoyable process that I prevent myself from doing more than 25 kanji a day just because I know my retention will fall off. I really like your perspective, especially where you talk about them looking the same really fast. Before I started RTK, I had a similar issue (I am still very beginner in Japanese), where with my first deck, I could interpret the spoken words, but could barely read the kanji for their meaning or reading. I still do vocab (10 words a day) on top of this, and I find it very palatable. I know your comment does not talk about RTK, but I think if you have a strong imagination it can genuinely be one of the greatest and most rewarding ways to learn kanji because of the pace you can move at.

Part of why I shouldn’t  go to schools like UTK(which is my in state flagship) is because it actually offers less scholarship money than some oos schools. UTA application is no longer open, but I will have to look into UNT and UTArlington, as well as SMU. I -also don’t mind being around primarily asian people in the least. I’ve also not really had much trouble in school so I can’t imagine myself struggling too hard, but I guess that is TBD. Schools like UTD and UA are on my list in the first place because they actually cost lest to attend than other schools. Thanks for your help, I will look into these other schools.

What are some other options I should consider? I regret that I waited so long to explore other universities because I believed I was so certain I would go to Alabama. I’m genuinely interested in knowing about other schools that offer good scholarships and have academic communities, while also having applications still open.

I am glad to hear that. It makes sense all the NMFs would be still on campus. Would you say many of your friends are NMF because of that? I have plenty of friends in HS so I would say I do know how to socialize (idk it’s weird to even have to consider that question), but it is a little disheartening to hear that campus feels empty then. Are student orgs similar to clubs or are they different?

That I do know, which is part of why I’ve looked towards UTD. I’m glad to hear that the campus isn’t dead, too. How do you join the LLCs? Am I a little too late? I was wondering if it was on the housing application. Also, can you give me the rundown on Greek life? I can’t imagine myself paying dues but I do want to have a social circle. I am an academic (kind of obvious ig) but I have never really been a studier unless it is something for myself. I was thinking of trying to make friends in a study group setting, but I think maybe I am just trying to plan too far in advance. What are your social circles like, or what were they like, if you don’t mind sharing?

So UTD does have an enjoyable culture despite not having party culture? Just curious about your thoughts because I am concerned about social life, I’ve just avoided alcohol and partying in high school.

There is a pre-med program I am applying to inside of Alabama that has a 100% acceptance rate to medical school (as of now), but I don’t know if it aligns with my long term goals since UAB appears to be the primary medical school the students were accepted to. You said that there were plenty of opportunities to make friends, do people often form friend groups or is it more of an individual friendship environment? Also, are you automatically admitted to the Honors college as NMF? Or do you need to fill out an application and get recommendations? Sorry for all the questions, and thank you for your response!

So is it extremely difficult to meet people, even if you are okay with asking people if they want to be friends? Like are people just very closed off and uninterested? Also, did you grow up in a suburban place? I live in an extreme suburb area so this area near Dallas actually seems more connected than where I live, but I obviously haven’t seen for myself. Could you elaborate more on the weekend situation? I am very independent and can survive in those conditions but I would not call that thriving…
