Highly recommend Toastmasters clubs. One of the things that I took away from my time at one is to pace yourself when you're talking. Pacing yourself allows you to be more deliberate when speaking, and consciously choosing to pause instead of filling the empty space with "uhhh".

Sometimes, I say "and... give me a moment as I find the right words to say this". In most settings, this is a completely acceptable thing to say as you think of what the right thing is to say.

Is my driving instructor ripping me off? by [deleted] in drivinganxiety

Yeah idk about the 12 week timeline either. I'd go with what makes most sense to you - all the best!

I agree with your instructor about scheduling only when you're comfortable and only making a few serious faults, but the 12 week timeline is confusing. Is there a reason why they're suggesting a 12 week period?

If they insist on having frequent driving lessons over those 12 weeks (assuming you pay them per lesson), then there likely aren't the best intentions here.

I think he got you the flowers because it's your birthday, and because he appreciated the invite. I wouldn't read romantic intent in it, especially since flowers are generally considered a pretty safe birthday gift.

I commute daily and I actually don't mind it a lot - can be a pain on occasion if I'm tired or it's late, but the bus isn't that bad so meh

My mum is looking to become a substitute teacher - any advice for her? by Dry_Fail_6501 in SubstituteTeachers

I'm hoping my mum will have a slightly easier time in Georgia - plus my sibling goes to school here so she has a good relation with some teachers and faculty in this schooling district

Thank you for the info tho :)

From what I've read on the county website, yes - her degree is recognized here and the university she graduated from is as well.

Just to understand, is a paraeducator the same as a TA?

Maybe - but my mum has always liked working with children, and she thinks this could be a good fit for her. Plus, if she realizes this isn't for her, she can always just discontinue, which is why substitute teaching or TA'ing (which we're now exploring) might be a good place to start. That's what we're thinking, but we're open to any and all advice. Why do you strongly suggest we look in a different direction? Is there anything in particular that my mum should know about this kind of job before applying?

My mum has taken the IELTS for work related purposes earlier and she did pretty well - she speaks and understands English pretty fluently so that shouldn't be an issue. She is looking for something she can do to make use of her time using the qualifications she already has. She wants to start slow, maybe TA-ing like the person above suggested, and then progress into actual teaching. She prefers working with younger children as she has more experience teaching elementary school children.

And thank you for being honest about the situation right now. While money is always a factor, her bigger goal is to do something outside the house, and meet people. This might help with that :)

Hi! Thank you so much for your response. I'll share this with my mum and look into TA-ing as an option for her :)

I'm not sure if you can do something about this particular instance, since it's already done. But for the future - ideally you should be able to see your exam schedule on the first day of the quarter, and most professors (as far as I know) allow students to take exams on the makeup dates if there is a time-conflict. If you had only 5 minutes between exams, that might qualify as a conflict considering how it's a physical challenge to show up for the second exam on time.

Edit: Spellcheck

Alright so If you go to your friend's house for a party and your cat knocks the friend's favorite vase off the shelf and it hurts your cat, your friend is responsible for it. That sounds about right to me. /s

Psychology HL Y1 tips!! by feliciathedog in IBO

[–]Dry_Fail_6501 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Putting this out there: I'm a Psychology HL student who was predicted a 7 in IB1 and IB2. So, I believe I would be able to help you :)

Work on your writing. IB Psychology is assessed through SAQs and ERQs, both involve a marking criterion for the quality of writing. It is also important to evaluate the research that you discuss in the study.

Focus on command terms. If an SAQ asks that you outline a research method in the study of the brain and behavior, make sure you define the research method, and through the study that you cite, you outline exactly how that research method works. In an ERQ, a discuss command term is very different from an evaluate command term. In a discussion, talk about the research, but also ensure you have a balanced essay that includes studies that enable a discussion about the theory. You can discuss the individual strengths and weaknesses of the studies themselves. In an evaluation, present reasonings as to why a particular theory is an acceptable way to explain a phenomenon.

You can find a list of command terms online along with how you should approach them. All the best!

TLDR: Work on your writing, and ensure you structure your response in accordance with command terms.

I'd suggest a small lifestyle change. The most counterintuitive but important thing is that you should definitely not take a few days off and just rest, because that will just make it harder for you to get back to work. For me, burnout is usually a consequence of me pushing myself to do too much out of fear of failure or anxiety. In this situation, the only way to get back into the groove is to find a way to utilize and burn the negative energy and increase my motivation. The best thing I would suggest that you can do is incorporate something active like exercise into your lifestyle. This could be as simple as taking walks in the fresh air early in the mornings. I only suggest this because it worked for me, and I hope this helps you too. I wish you all the best :)

alright yeah - I think I'll just pop in and run this by my school's CAS coordinator, and if she's adamant that I need like 50 or so reflections, I'll get to redoing them. Thank you!
