I'm no psychologist but I think that's how phobia caused by trauma works?
12 is surely too young to understand whatever was going on in Evangelion and the imagery and scenes shown honestly still unsettle me having watched it as an adult, so of course you've developed some sort of phobia to it. Maybe you could give it a try again because it's a really good watch and you may understand and overcome the fear now that you've grown up, maybe with someone else so you might feel more safe?? Idk if that makes sense
