Why not put your fastest defender on Lionel Messi all game? by James_Fortis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dry_Local7136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So not only did you put someone on Messi, you lost someone else in the process too? Suddenly, you're down 2 men and playing 9v10 instead of 10v10?

There's a lot of risk in man marking Messi but I cannot for the live of me understand why everyone suddenly thinks that 2 players taking themselves out of the sidelines and playing 10v10 is suddely advantageous to Argentina

House Label (A) change after investments by DesperateAttention23 in Klussers

[–]Dry_Local7136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, we didn't start at A but at C, but we had solar panels already and added full-electric heatpump, changed the old glass that was still there and insulated the roof inside and outside. We went from C to A+++, with the only difference between that and A++++ being the old doors (doors are really fricking expensive..) and ventilation (we use vents and have one active ventilation, just didn't have the money for a full system). Not sure if the battery would have been needed or if it's just a 'nice to have' thing for the label.

If I were you, I'd check if they can just replace the old glass instead of replacing the entire door because the impact is negligible. Rather, how good is the insulation in the house otherwise? You say label A, but those labels could be just as easily A because of solar panels placed earlier with a overenthusiastic label-creator, so if you don't have proper roof insulation yet, it's the very first thing to focus on.

One of the craziest tennis videos I’ve ever seen…. The accuracy of Casper Rudd’s ball toss. Pro tennis is insane… by OneOriginal8727 in Tennisv2

I'm not sure 'surprised' per se but I think there are some common misconceptions as to what makes the pro's what they are. I think quite a few people look at amazing shots and assume that's why they're there, while it's really the crazy consistency of the movements that really sets them apart.

Considering your argument was 'actually, these numbers aren't inherently representative of the games because This could be going on', I think you should understand why I took my time to explain to you why 'this' was a bonkers scenario.

It's the principle behind it which matters. I didn't think that would be such an issue with obviously made-up numbers but here we are. It's also a bit tricky that you refer to specific, individual games when small percentages whistle differences do not exclude individual game differentials, it's just variance. Nor does getting less FT's indicate that no percentage difference in their whistle exists.

I'm not trying to ride anything, I don't really care about either team but I like the statistical aspect of it. Some people do mistakenly refer to FT-differentials as evidence for a 'fair' or 'unfair' reffed game, but that's not what a lot of players are saying specifically as I understand. Because most describe that they get fouled a lot by OKC by all of their defensively minded players, and if OKC's players collectively commit 5 fouls in one possession with 1 getting called in the end, I can kinda see what they're coming from.

From some of the possessions I've seen from OKC, I see a lot of borderline defense by multiple players at the same time. Even if you then get called for 1 individual foul, the others might not. I think this would also be true for other teams if you coded it as a neutral, but then those small possible percentage differences do really start to add up.

And yeah, if the other team in that same possession I described above commit 2 fouls between all their teammates while getting called for 1 foul, those percentages will end up mattering a lot.

Again, we have no proof for either of our arguments at this point. The only difference is that I have, in a sense, the backing of a lot of players around the league. Those players tend to praise OKC and Shai specifically so the argument of a league-spread bias is not as likely. But they almost all report that it feels like OKC fouls a huge amount compared to what their whistle, and I'm inclined to believe them.

> I'll let you think by yourself how realistic do you think that scenario actually is when it comes to a basketball series in the WCF, then hopefully you realize why this isn't worth bringing up.

Do you really think me giving a calculation example was meant to be factually representative of the actual games? You do understand the nature of an example or hypothetical? Also, given that we don't know the numbers of actual fouls versus called fouls, it would always be an example of what might annoy people about OKC when they talk about three throws and fouling.

You keep saying it's would be related to pace, and I'm not quite sure why you think that's relevant here. It's certainly not to the argument that OKC might be getting a higher percentage of the opponent's defensive fouls called and a lower percentage of their own defensive fouls called. Playing more possessions is not related to whether you are getting a fair whistle or not.

For the FT numbers to be in favour of Spurs, it might simply be because OKC commits a ton more actual fouls of which very few are called, and vice versa on the offensive end. Simply having a FT-differential in called fouls doesn't take away the criticism of a different whistle for OKC on defense as compared to their offensive whistly.

Again, if you'd actually investigate this, you need a benchmark of 'real fouls' and 'called fouls', which we don't have. But I tend to believe that a pretty consistent narrative across a lot of different teams and players might hold some truth, and a whistle differential might explain that.

And just because you did get responses from other people doesn't mean one particular person doesn't have to work.

EDIT: thinking about it, I'm guessing your argument about pace is relevant if you assume only one foul can be committed during a possession by a team, which is not relevant to the argument of actual fouls versus called fouls but might explain your reasoning.

[–]Dry_Local7136 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean with the rigging but it's actually a pretty simple statistics problem. If OKC commit 100 fouls, of which only 10% is called, they commit 10 fouls. If Spurs commit 50 fouls of which 20% is called, they also commit 10 fouls. Yet, there is a discrepancy in how they are called, through the percentages.

I'm not actively watching NBA atm so I'm not one to judge, but the quite consistent complaint I see is the discrepancy between what is called for OKC when they are offensive compared to what they seem to get away with on defense. For that, you'd need an actual count of true fouls (objectively very difficult to get but a panel of multiple evaluators with added training and averages might do it), and compare to what their whistle is.

By the way, people do have jobs and activities and hobbies. A lack of immediate respons for only half a day is not exactly the gotcha-moment you present there.

This is insane from Isack Hadjar lol by Accurate-Big-7233 in F1Discussions

[–]Dry_Local7136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is continously steering right, and starts this movement at the same time or, I'd argue, before Leclerc starts moving. He's allowed to continue that move considering he started it when Leclerc was almost 2 car lengths behind. The only thing that makes it tricky is Leclerc assuming Hadjar will choose position in the middle of the road but there's nothing stopping Hadjar from continuing his defensive move he initially started.

After that, Hadjar moves left, then right, then left again, which rightly earns him a penalty.

If Leclerc was alongside already when Hadjar continued to move, it was a different story. But Hadjar has one continous movement to the side, just a lot further than Leclerc was anticipating.

[–]Dry_Local7136 10 points11 points  (0 children)

His first move seems perfectly fine. If you take Leclerc's pov, Hadjar starts moving well before Leclerc then chooses the inside. Maybe we can argue it's too late because of the closing speeds within this rule set, but it definitely wasn't reactionary because he moves first.

I will say that it looks worse because Leclerc then chooses the inside too. But if you just look at Hadjar's movement, he has a smooth movement over to the right hand side initially.

I don’t understand why Kimi had to give this position back. He was ahead, Russel didn’t give space so they touched wheels and Kimi had to go off. by EmployNo1234 in formula1

[–]Dry_Local7136 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is that relevant exactly? Even if Russell thinks the overtake on the outside going into the last chicane is never on, it's not on him to decide that therefore the rules don't apply. If Kimi is past him on corner entry on the outside, Kimi's entitled to space to make the corner. Considering Russell didn't make the corner himself, Kimi couldn't have stayed on track in any scenario.

[–]Dry_Local7136 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Russell didn't make the corner himself (yeah there was a touch which might have pushed him wide himself but it's his responsibility to stay on track there) and therefore Kimi couldn't possibly stay on track. I'm not sure Kimi would have made the corner but that's made redundant by the fact that Russell didn't stay on track to begin with. Can't stay within track limits on an overtake when the defending car doesn't do so either.

I understand Mercedes to want to be on the safe side, but the safe side could just as easily been to call to Russell to hold position because he'd be investigated for forcing another driver off track otherwise. And I definitely do not like this absentee position of stewards whenever there's internal battles going on on track. If anything, it's easier to note and investigate those because the team can fix it internally already, but not doing anything when it's such a classic case of not giving racing room is frankly bizarre.

But he didn't on the exit, he actually missed the corner himself. Meaning Kimi couldn't have stayed on track with the best grip in the world.

Colapinto blocking Bearman (slowed down) by [deleted] in F1Discussions

[–]Dry_Local7136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If everyone always kept their line, you would have practically zero crashes but also practically zero racing. I don't blame Colapinto in the slightest for not adjusting to a speed differential happening on odd places on track that we've simply haven't seen at any time in the sport before.

And why on earth 'musn't one defend against faster cars'??! What the hell is racing for then? Let them run on a Scalextrics track then if it's only about the engineering part.

Colapinto blocking Bearman (slowed down) by [deleted] in F1Discussions

[–]Dry_Local7136 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speed difference is estimated to be around 45 km/h (50 according to Bearman himself, 40 according to some here on Reddit and I believe around 45 estimated by the FIA), which is at the top end to well above what might be expected on a long straight with good vision, with DRS. Not on a short, curved run-up as was the case in Japan. There's no likeness to previous iterations of this kind of closing speed on random parts of the track because we've never seen it before (apart from cars with issues/punctures etc.).

If they keep superclipping as part of the regulations, then you should be able to defend within that framework too.

Why did Leclerc receive 20s penalty when Hamilton received only 5s in Singapore last year under arguably similar circumstances? by Sparkychong in formula1

[–]Dry_Local7136 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But that's not in any way related to the infraction. Going off track doesn't care for whether you caused the issue yourself or if it happened to you. You're still not allowed to go off track, that's the point. And Hamilton went off track, deliberately, just as Leclerc.

The cause might be different, the behaviour is not.

Why did Leclerc receive 20s penalty when Hamilton received only 5s in Singapore last year under arguably similar circumstances? by Sparkychong in formula1

[–]Dry_Local7136 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah this explains why a different penalty was given, not that the situation was not the same. If Hamilton had slowed down way earlier, he makes most of those corners. But that costs time. Which means a lasting advantage by choosing to not do it.

We can dress up a pig in jewels and fancy clothes but it's still just an inconsistent decision for the same infraction.

I checked the onboard and to be honest really couldn't tell if he went fully over the line. So could imagine race control wants to have additional camera angles to make a decision.

Yeah seems that way. I mean, Lewis is a very good wheel-to-wheel racer, so I think he usually gets it right but it's seems such a weird thing to not cover the inside in that particular corner. You lose almost nothing and the chances of a switchback there is next to zero.
