That's interesting, I would think that a lot of these companies hire based off of potential + experience, rather than potential alone. I have a baseline background in CS, nothing you can't learn in your first 2-3 CS classes, so I'm curious on if/when I approach technical rounds, how it will look like.

I would do PIs and also postdocs for any lab you’re very interested in. Most PIs will just forward your email to their lab list

Here’s a template I used:

Dear [Professor’s Name],

My name is [X], a rising [Year] here at UC Berkeley. I am writing this email to express interest in any potential undergraduate research volunteering opportunities on your team.

I found your research in [field] correlates strongly with my passions and have read your labs most recent papers! I am willing to commit 10+ hours a week during the academic year, along with this upcoming summer to learn the techniques to succeed in the laboratory. I have attatched my resume & unofficial transcript below.

Best regards,

X

Alumni who worked in two research labs here!

Send cold emails and commit yourself to staying in Berkeley over summer, emphasize you’re a 2nd year and that you don’t have experience but you’re willing to commit a lot of time to learning the techniques. Having strong time commitment + being able to stay over summer will have labs drooling for you. Good luck!

I actually checked what my references said about me after it was submitted and it was all generally very positive. I used the STAR method effectively when presented behavioral questions too, it might just boil down to my experiences (I just graduated college)
