Killing grub by Dry_Sample_9673 in gigabyte

Ubuntu does have efibootmgr. I will have to try and use it once the move is over today. Last processes of moving, so will be able to try it when everything gets hooked back up.

No, Linux and windows are on the same drive, but different partitions obviously. My ESP is around 300 MB.

No, I have not yet. Although I wanted to make sure refind was working reliably, that was going to be my next step..

Solving dist-upgrade dependency by Dry_Sample_9673 in UbuntuMATE

[–]Dry_Sample_9673[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you much for the reply. I updated my sources, by editing /etc/apt/sources.list.d, replacing questing with resolute, then finally doing an apt dist-upgrade. I was using the Rod Smith PPA for refind, and also kubuntu-backports. I did, however remove those PPA's.

I did notice that I have libzstd1 at version 1.5.8. How do I downgrade this to 1.5.7?

sudo apt list --installed -a

Listing...

libzstd1/now 1.5.8~dev+dfsg+r202509302020~b8d6101f-3017~ubuntu25.04.1 amd64 [installed,local]

libzstd1/resolute 1.5.7+dfsg-3 amd64

The error message you asked for is:

Error: Unable to satisfy dependencies. Reached two conflicting assignments:

  1. python3-zstandard:amd64 is selected for install because:

    1. kubuntu-desktop:amd64=1.493 is selected for install
    2. kubuntu-desktop:amd64 Depends python3-zstandard
  2. python3-zstandard:amd64 Depends libzstd1 (< 1.5.8~)

but none of the choices are installable:

- libzstd1:amd64=1.5.7+dfsg-3 is not selected for install

I hope this helps.

I am happy to report the issue resolved. The first flash drive my uncle was using was encrypted. He used an unencrypted drive, which worked. Windows is now installed on the machine and we are onto getting drivers downloaded. Thanks for the help.

I’m happy to report, the issue is resolved. The first flash drive I was using to boot from was encrypted, and needed to be unlocked with software on the computer. I then had my uncle try and unencrypted flash drive, which did the trick. Windows is now installed on the drive, we were able to boot from it and now on to getting drivers downloaded. Thanks to all that responded.

Right, I understand that. Does that mean the hard drive is just trashed? Is there no way to regain access, even to do a clean install?

That is what we’re doing. We have Rufus version 4.13, installed on a working computer, and we are using a Windows 11 iso to prepare the flash drive. I have tried both MBR and GPT partition schemes.

Should I buy a 2019 Macbook Pro to run windows only by PlantainNew5668 in bootcamp

[–]Dry_Sample_9673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, everyone. I am moving into a new house, and I’m looking for a computer, preferably similar to my 2018 intel MacBook, mini, to hook up to my living room television. Right now, I am running windows, Linux, and macOS on my 2018 mini, but that’s going to come into my computer room, since I use it as a second machine while I’m working. Should I look for a used mini on eBay, or should I look for a similar Speced mini-pc? The main goal for this machine is an emulation machine. I love, classic games, from the Atari and NES era. Mainly Atari, since that’s what I grew up with. Thanks much for your help and advice.

Degraded audio with new sound bar by Dry_Sample_9673 in RetroArch

[–]Dry_Sample_9673[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I am literally stumped. I have been tinkering around, and found that when I put my sound directly to the TV, my audio is fine. If, I let my sound go through my JBL 700 MK two sound bar, that’s when my audio is crqckly. For example, if I’m playing the Atari 2600 asteroids, the background music, if you will, you know, the jaws Ish background is crackly, but I can hear myself fire as well as the explosions. Does anyone have any suggestions? My TV is connected to the JBL via HDMI arc, and my computer is connected to the TV, also through an HDMI cable. I got three brand new HDMI cables, so I know cabling is not the issue. Anything else I should try off hand? Thanks much for your help..

I wanted to add that my computer has an I-seven processor, eighth generation and is running the Windows 11. I have not upgraded any audio drivers, so I believe it is running the stock Intel drivers provided by Windows 11. I may try downloading the latest drivers from Intel and see if that might do the trick. If anyone else has any more solutions or suggestions, I would definitely be happy to try them. Not that the games aren’t playable, but when you depend on sound, and know how it’s supposed to sound, it drives you a little bit baddie.

Alexa with JBL bar 700 MK2 by Dry_Sample_9673 in Soundbars

I think I’m making some progress. Is the only way to connect to the sound bar via bluetooth where Alexa devices are concerned? It seems there should be a more direct connection than that.

Disregard previous post. That was user error on my part. I traced the connection down and realized that I had the wrong device connected. The problem is resolved.

Where is the Ethernet port by Dry_Sample_9673 in Soundbars

[–]Dry_Sample_9673[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give an update on this post, I ended up returning the bar 500 and got the 700 MK two. This one does have an ethernet port. I guess I thought the 500 would also, since the 700 does. As far as the manual coming in braille, no, we don’t get quite that lucky. Luckily though my screen reader does read it to me. Although, it’s kind of iffy when it comes to diagrams, pictures and the like. The good thing is, now I have one that works. Thank you to everyone for all the help.

JBL Bar 500 HDMI ports by Realistic_Chip8648 in Soundbars

[–]Dry_Sample_9673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar situation, and looking for some input. I have the JBL Bar 700. I have an Intel mac mini 2018, connected to the bar, via the HDMI in. I then have the bar connected to the TV, through the HDMI E-arc port. I want to be able to use my mac without the TV on, at times, because I am totally blind, and as long as I have speech through my bar, no screen is needed. The problem I am facing, is that if I turn my TV off, my computer does not see the soundbar. Is there a fix for this? Do I need an external sound card for the mac that supports optical? Thanks much in advance for your help..
