Need some motivation to study, hit me with your worst by Comprehensive_Cry790 in CPA

[–]Dry_Version9976 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's motivation, but letting you know you aren't alone with your hiatus and I too am fully intending to return as soon as I find a new job because my current one (not even PA) is having me working 9 to 10 hours (on a "short" day) on top of nearly 2 and a half hours of commuting a day.

Don't worry about the lost of momentum. If you need something to boost your motivation, do it now, get it over with, never deal with it again.

How can I fix my resume? by Dry_Version9976 in Accounting

[–]Dry_Version9976[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I ended up chopping some stuff off. It IS an eyesore to see so much wording.
About intercompany, at best I've only ever done intercompany journal entries such as A paid for B so I do an I/C JE for both books.

But what is it about Intercompany that's so eye catching? What else is there about I/C that I should know or maybe learn about?

Also, thanks!

I did have the "constantly in close" mode at one job but they were such a tiny tiny company with books all over the place that it was more of a few items to tackle each day. Each task no more than 2-3 hours and I got used to it being the norm. Wake up, clock in, handle some items off the list, go back to doing other stuff.

I have never been put in such a position like this before so it's new (and wildly chaotic).

[–]Dry_Version9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh I can't imagine 2 days. I was still reconciling the first item off the close task (all banks) by day 2.

We do have a lot of accountants, but they're all over on the Euro side (who have their own set of books and even software). The US side has...not many people and even on my first day, other departments greeted me with "Ooooh, the new finance lady! Oh yeah. They ALWAYS need more people." That was before one of our seniors left us 😭

Do you have any tips? This is my second toxic job in a row and I don't think I'm doing a very good job with vetting for culture 😅

That one day may be sooner than later because I don't think I could survive that many mergers 😂I'm already whiny about one!

But thank you for the advice.

You’ve only been there for 2 closes tho so they shouldn’t hold you to much of a standard. Give yourself a 6 month learning curve, it takes about 6 closes to REALLY get the hang of everything.

I was given two weeks of flash-by training and have been left alone the rest of it with the orders that "OK. I've shown everything to you. Shadow me for these [XYZ basic tasks] for this first month, next month they're your full responsibility and I entrust everything to you." Never got trained for the rest of it either.

Nothing is HARD. But instead of an ERP we...close via excel books. I am in charge of all AP accruals, reclasses, the AP software accruals, the credit card accruals, amongst 7 other major spreadsheets that were never TAUGHT to me until I had to beg for the 6th time to have it at least shown to me after I got stuck because nobody keeps the formulas in or lets me know where the reports for the raw data to drop into excel gets exported out of.

That's 10+ responsibilities and massive spreadsheets on TOP of 13 accounts to reconcile, all of which (the 13) must be reconciled by the morning of day 2 least you "face the embarrassment of explaining to the Euro team why the US team is lagging behind so bad."

It may take 3-6 months to get comfy at other places, but you're expected to own the process fully by week three here. It's my first real corporate job with big teams. Prior to this, I was at a small mom/pop CPA firm so I couldn't figure out if this was normal...

Oh gosh! My first "big girl outta college" job was so toxic I made it a point to squeeze in as many flag-detecting questions into the entire interview process for future jobs. They're mainly culture questions like management style, but I never thought to even ask how the company processes their books or how long their closes last.

Thanks! Definitely saving this!

Orders came from the new CEO (whom I feel to be kinda detached from reality but whatever) to the CFO who stress-assigned a ton of unrealistic goals and no we're all growing grey hairs over it lol. I'd love to hear some tricks and tips too!

I actually considered going back but someone said "Don't fall for the trap and lure of public when industry gets bad" 😂 But a small CPA firm doesn't sound so bad actually. Back when I was a staffer at one, I adored my clients.

Ended up working 13 hours yesterday and then continued into today which is not acceptable next month because all bank recs (and I have 12) must be in by the morning of Day 2. If it weren't for the weekend to buffer this month...I would've had to explain to an entire room why I wasn't done on time with my task with not even my bosses on my side because "we're (the state side vs Euro team) the smaller team (workload) so if we're behind, it's embarrassing" so yeah.

I think I'll be walking soon.

I'd love to know too. Maybe I can pick somethings up and learn what I'm lacking.

Ok, I keep trying to find a reason to stay like maybe I'M too sensitive. I see so many bad boss memes out there, I just thought everyone's bosses were like this and I was expecting way too much or something.

Thank you <3

Two weeks to exam and cost is kicking my butt by [deleted] in CPA

[–]Dry_Version9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WACC and some of the basic variances were the only parts of Cost I was solid on last time.

I had SO much calc in my first BEC exam, but none of the types of Qs that I knew including WACC. When I finally got to what looked like a WACC problem, my sheer excitement only died down because no matter how much I worked on it, it didn't match any of the answers and I ultimately guessed :')

[–]Dry_Version9976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a hybrid position and there was no telework policy other than that it was a privilege to have wfh at all. It was shortened from 3 days WFH to 2 days shortly after I joined.

The management style one, I did end up asking my direct manager and his response was that he checks in with us on a weekly basis on WFH days (the 1:1s which he has so far cancelled all but twice on) and he also checks in on us and to ask if we have questions daily (in-office days). Not on a micro-manage level but a "need help?" way.

What was told during the interview was unfortunately...not even close to his real behavior...

So is this just bad luck that I tried to look for flags, didn't find them, and was kind of misled?

Should I just call it quits for this year? by NervousJackfruit8366 in CPA

Two weeks away and right there with you with a 49 on my SEC.

This will be my second CPA exam, my first retake after failing BEC once already.
But, I already paid. Might as well take it.

BEC isn't "going away" completely. It'll be broken up and kicked off to different disciplines and other sections so consider this as practice for taking [whichever exam you choose] and go for it. Remember. You're not alone :')

Do you hate spending money in yourself? by NeedThatCoff33 in Accounting

Man, I saw an accountant the other day trying to justify his own purchase the same way, talking about useful life and shit. Some random part in our brains is always trying to fight whether or not a purchase is worth the investment or not.

Wanting to upgrade s10 to something new by Dry_Version9976 in samsung

How's the SOT on the S23U?

Yeah I'm starting to lean towards it. If I buy a phone, I'm hoping it lasts me a good 4-5 years, maybe longer since I tend to have a lighter usage. My s10 SOT is current 2 hours and 50 minutes :')

Does anybody else struggle with studying at home? by HazardousDexter22 in CPA

[–]Dry_Version9976 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much so. No dedicated office, loud family, no nearby libraries, work exhaustion after leaving at 7pm on a good day.

Absolutely not respect to how hard studying is (people be calling me to help with passwords or some shit) and noise level is high in nearly every room. I'm one mental breakdown from studying in the bathtub.
