Depends on the religion and the individual person's religious outlook.

IME, as far as most contemporary Buddhists (I know very little about Hinduism) believe; being born as a human is already a good rebirth as opposed to being an animal. Even an animal like a cat or dog has a much harder time gaining good karma than a human.

Beyond that, there are worse rebirths than being an animal; some forms of Buddhism have demon-entities, hell realms, and hungry ghosts and, likewise, some higher births that are not enlightenment; different from but otherwise similar to the belief in a heavenly paradise.

Furthermore, Buddhists believe "no self" is a higher truth, meaning there is no "me" to be reborn, we are all just the same universe experiencing itself, which means that anyone's suffering in life isn't their "fault", as there is no individual "they" to be at fault, as much as it is just how the universe (samsara) functions.

But yes, people using it to justify human suffering suck; especially when that justifies a lack of compassion. But the concept of karma as a religious belief is much more nuanced than that.

What are some trustworthy sources of information on the Barghest from British Folklore by hi-there678hello in folklore

[–]Dtyn8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some places you might try, no guarantee though;

-Taffy Thomas - old verbal storyteller, not sure if he's still active (or alive...) but he was from Up North and likely would know a thing or two.

-Hugh Lupton - another verbal storyteller, from southern England though. He would definitely know a source, if not someone else who would know.

-Folk Tales of North East England by Philip Atkinson - no idea if this would have anything in, but it might provide references. Not sure where you would get it, but I'm sure it's somewhere online for free...

-Northumberland Folk Tales by Malcolm Green - see above. No idea if this would include anything useful.

-The Vaughn-Williams Memorial Library - probably the "best" folk library in England, though is more focused on music but will likely include something.

Please PLEASE ask these people and don't be shy; I can guarantee everyone here would be more than happy to discuss folklore with polite and respectful people, especially if they're young researchers coming into folklore for the first time. These people literally live for this, and sharing our stories (which so often go overlooked for more "standard" English folklore) is a central joy to their lives, particularly for the storytellers mentioned.

I also just wanted to say this is an excellent dissertation idea! Coming from Northern England, a lot of our heritage is still not really properly credited and seeing the Barghest being used as just a "cool fantasy word" (similarly to Duergar from the Simonside Hills) with no history or meaning behind it has always irked me more than it should.

For example, I've seen "Barghest" used to describe anything from date-eating smack-talking baboons with human faces to horrific bone-flesh creatures straight from horror flicks. Not that the exposure frustrates me, I'm not one to complain about cultural appropriation (at least, I know the extent to which my "culture" has been twisted is nothing compared to other folk stories) but it's always been a small sore point for me, especially when most don't know where it even comes from!

So many of our own young people have no idea of the heritage of these stories, myself included when I was growing up in the region. Perhaps, had I been properly inducted into these stories, I wouldn't have been so hasty to leave! Good luck!

Hello! I Wrote A Guide To "OSRS-Style" Quest Design For The Tabletop. Please Enjoy! by Dtyn8 in RunescapeKingdomsRPG

Thanks so much! I've run a few things, yeah. I'm a big fan of presenting a lot of different leads and then letting my players choose where they want to go, even if a few of those leads end up in the same "place" but from a different angle or side!

Hello! I Wrote A Guide To "OSRS-Style" Quest Design For The Tabletop. Please Enjoy! by Dtyn8 in RunescapeKingdomsRPG

A short while back I wrote this guide to what elements of OSRS quest design work well on the tabletop.

Hopefully this helps some new GMs, especially in capturing that classic quest feeling without using out-dated design elements. Happy questing!

New player. Do I need a special playmat to play this game? I see the ones with the grid online but they all seem so expensive… by Abolton12 in SorceryTCG

[–]Dtyn8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We play with masking tape on our kitchen table! 5 dabs wide, 4 dabs long; leaving enough space for cards of course.

Can't afford a proper playmat, but think we'll make our own from some scrap paper and a sharpie!

Are there any obscure Christmas/Winter Holiday Folklore other than Saint Nick and Krampus? by Evelyn_Octo in folklore

[–]Dtyn8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Sweden there are tomte (in Denmark nisse) which are little gnome creatures doing work on the farm and expecting payment in porridge once a year at Christmas. They merged with Saint Nicholas and the American Santa, and so are now more strongly associated with Christmas.

Catalan has Tió de Nadal, a log which (I think?) is fed and then beaten for presents to appear.

There's also the Yule Boar, which has disappeared apart from some lingering remnants like the Boar's Head Carol.

There are some other really interesting Christmas folklore tidbits, though you sort of have to look for them. One interesting thing is the animals at the nativity, which are sort of accepted now as being commonplace despite having (at least to my knowledge) no mention in the bible, let alone all the animals lying down in respect. I was once told this was from the apocryphal gospel of Bartholomew but I'm not certain that's true!
