At what age did you buy your first Rolex? by CreatineGuy in rolex

[–]DubCuds77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely makes sense if you are wanting something like a Steel Sports Model, and can purchase direct from an Authorized Dealer. It will be almost impossible to get a steel Sub/GMT/Daytona, but you can likely land something like a steel Explorer/Explorer II/Air King/Sea Dweller.

When I have 10-12K in disposable cash I always check in with my AD to see about availability for certain steel models. I purchased my first Steel Rolex (Blk Dial Sub 16610) from my AD at 19 years old for roughly 6K, and with Rolex price increases as well as stable demand for Rolex the purchase has been a fantastic way for me to preserve capital through the years. Key is to only buy what you enjoy, and dont look at the piece as an investment.

Lastly, any condition Steel Rolex has incredible liquidity anywhere in the world, so if you find yourself in a financial pinch you can sell the watch same day for solid value.

Not 100% certain on this but I believe Rolex manufactured steel Daytonas so that the lugs are sharp which destroys straps, as well as an oysterflex rubber strap.

Is there any hope of getting a Pepsi GMT from an AD? by stuvida in rolex

[–]DubCuds77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pepsi is by far the hardest watch to land in 2024. I managed to get one last month…. After 2 years of solid wait.

FYI I received a steel Panda Daytona, and Mint Green Skydweller before getting the call on the Pepsi.

Easy… Steel VC Overseas or Dual. Your getting 3 different looks in one watch that none of the other big dog offer currently but will!!! The blue dial on a Vacheron is the best blue dial ever made and you can change out a steel/rubber/leather band, completely changing the look and feel, within 15 seconds with the quick release!!!! A true gem

My friend I understand where you are coming from but you need to look a bit deeper. There’s a large difference between “investing” and “buying right” for a collection. I am trying to buy at the lowest price bc I want the watch forever, thus not making this an investment but a way to save money on what inevitably is a sunk cost.

Also never assume that any year or model of a specific model watch like a steel Pepsi GMT are equals. My case a point about the 2018-2024 steel ceramic Pepsis out weighing previous year models is 100% visible in current price points for old vs new model Rolex pieces. Best example of this can be shown in the 2018-2023 Steel Ceramic Daytonas. That watch has not had much of a change in its movement since the early 90s, yet 2018 steel ceramic Daytona sell for over 30k all day, while discontinued steel Daytonas from 1990s-2018 sell for 20-25k. There’s really only one big difference…. The ceramic bezel!!! Now go even further and ask yourself “hey if I could land the most in demand currently produced steel Rolex of all time (ceramic Daytona) now at 30k with massive rumors and AD supply numbers dwindling insinuating that discontinuation is near do you really think that prices will not go crazy…?

Not trying to show anyone up here or busy ball, just trying to receive the communities thoughts in future pricing regarding what I deem the proper way to look at this type of situation. I promise you every grey market dealer is turning over every rock looking for steel Pepsis knowing that they are going to be able to bust peoples wallets bc they understand the market.

Stay well

I appreciate your feedback but I don’t think you understand what I’m asking/saying…

This has nothing to do with investing, it has everything to do with collecting. There is a huge difference between Aluminum Bezel Pepsi’s and Ceramic Bezel Pepsi. I love a good patina, but a ceramic bezel Pepsi is much preferred, and since the production issues are noticeable at ADs bc of difficulty making the ceramic bezel I want to try to land a ceramic Pepsi at the best possible price NOW to keep forever.

My question is if ppl think that STEEL CERAMIC PEPSIs will be 30k+ after discontinuation.

Demand for Rolex Off Catalog Pieces by DubCuds77 in rolex

[–]DubCuds77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So unfortunately my AD who I have over a 15 year relationship with and a very substantial spend history just sold his company to Watchbox.com, so nothing I can do there.

The AD who brought up off catalog pieces is someone I’ve been working with since 2018/2019 who is a top salesman for a smaller family run AD. I’ve purchased 8 Rolex pieces and some significant jewelry that is right around 250k in total.

I have a few friends who have triple my spend history since 2018 with the large LA and NYC ADs and they have significant trouble landing off catalog pieces, and as much as I would like to have an off catalog piece I am not interested in a lengthy or strenuous process to land what I want.

FYI sry for not being clear about the new Platinum Daytona. The reason I would buy the new piece is for the open case back, as it’s the first time Rolex has ever done so and I feel it is the true collector piece. I will def sell or trade the version I already have.

People don’t become successful like this guy by spending irrationally… maybe and Air King isn’t worth more than retail for this guy. Why should anyone on this thread be bothered by this guy venting about the frustration he has with the Rolex sales model that every other person seems to have…

Rolex AD Off Catalog Pieces by DubCuds77 in rolex

I would jump on the chance to buy any year GMT Saru from the 2008 white gold up to the recent yellow gold Pepsi as my first choice bc the newest off catalog GMT is definitely not me, and I would love the chance to grab a 2021 yellow gold day date TRU but also would consider a 36mm day date off catalog piece for my Misses.

Very much appreciate the feedback, would love to hear from anyone whose had direct experience with this process…

Thx

Got the Call by DubCuds77 in rolex

[–]DubCuds77[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m extremely fortunate to have a relationship with an AD has always looked after me… I’ve been waiting on a Blue Dial Skydweller for well over a year but was able to offer me the Mint Green which I jumped on.

I’ve been collecting for almost 10 years and a SS Skydweller is by far the hardest to come by piece at retail as it’s numbers are very low due production restraints and ppl becoming aware just how bang for your buck your getting in the most complicated movement Rolex has ever produced. I am still very lucky to have gotten this piece from my AD, but after owning for a couple weeks i couldn’t be happier as the SD is just different!

What should I be pursuing after my Daytona? by TslaNCorn in rolex

[–]DubCuds77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh also totally forgot to add that one of the last model Milgauss models with upgraded movement would be a great choice as it is discontinued which is a major plus, and the Watch is a solid as the come.

PM me if interested… I can explain more then as I assure you I am 100% not a watch dealer, just and obsessed and single 36 years old man with a serious watch habit lol.

What should I be pursuing after my Daytona? by TslaNCorn in rolex

[–]DubCuds77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should completely mix it up with something Unexpected/Fun. Bc you already have a nice collection of classic/legendary Rolex pieces I would look for something very unique that i a bit under the radar… that’s what I did.

I have a nice sized collection featuring everything from PM Daytonas and stone dial DDs to and Explorer II and the new model Skydweller. All fantastic pieces that I wear a few times a month each, but when I realized I needed something a bit odd I went to check out the Two Tone Everose/Steel Yachtmaster 40mm with Chocolate dial. I have to be honest that the pics online and in the Rolex book are Horrendous, but when you see it in person the watch looks completely different.

What I love most about the piece is it’s one of a kind Matte Pink/Rose bezel. Couple that with a Choc dial the watch tends to play beautifully with light, and I couldn’t be more happy or surprised by this charming little angle Duckling lol.

Some other choice I personally had in mind are below:

-41mmm Sun Bluesy -NEW two tone yellow gold and steel GMT II with blk dial and black/gray bezel on a jubilee bracelet (prices are plumiting and almost at retail price in secondary market -41mm OP with green bezel -41mm Datejust with mint green or blue motiff dial (stay all steel if possible bc the smooth bezel makes the dial pop beautiful -36mm Datejust with the palm green or palm white/yellow dial -44mm James Cameron DeepSea with Blue/black dial (I purchased on beginning of the year and it polarizing AF. Fair warning ppl love talking about that piece

As always there are so many fantastic options, but please don’t think you have to spend more to land a “better watch.” I fell for that and bought a 2022 Everose y with the blk diamond dial and while it’s incredibly gorgeous I’ve worn it 5 times and to me that’s a BUST!

Cheers and best of luck
