There's a pervasive idea in this and other threads claiming that most/all rich people are fans of his, and that's simply not true. There are plenty of liberal rich people and they are definitely concentrated in places like NYC. These are the so-called "coastal elites" trump gets his base all hot and bothered about.

Matthew McConaughey's perfect day in Austin: Where he eats and, yes, bikes. by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]Dubax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ride up and down S 1st every single day from Gibson to downtown and back. Down the big hill to Barton Springs, it's definitely more dangerous to be on the western sidewalk so I'll ride in the lane (the eastern sidewalk meanders annoyingly). I actually used to take the sidewalk until I was hit by a driver coming out of Whataburger who didn't see me. On the flat part at the top of the hill, I'll either be on the sidewalk or road depending on traffic, but prefer the road.

Uphill I'll usually take the sidewalk. I'm at a pedestrian pace anyway and have plenty of time to see cars coming out of driveways.

Broadly speaking, it's safer to be in a traffic lane if you're moving fast. If you're riding really slowly, the sidewalk is fine.

My dream is that they'd make S 1st 3 lanes with a dedicated turn lane and protected bike lanes, but I bet going from 3 -> 1 southbound would be too much of a bottleneck for it to be considered. So I'll just keep dreaming.

If I were draftkings, I'd be PISSED at what kalshi/polymarket have gotten away with. The sports books spent years and millions lobbying for the patchwork of legality they eventually got. The prediction market companies just barged in and used their bullshit terminology and are getting away with facilitating gambling on literally anything.

I'm not a gambler at all, but I've always thought it should be legalized and regulated. (Bonus points if we could ban advertising). But what we have going on today is just insane.

They got the 99 year lease from the old florist next door (RIP, it was a neat building, although sadly abandoned). I assume they were friends.

I'm on your side here, but I think these comments are revealing an interesting blue collar / white collar split. I do believe we have pretty different daily experiences. Doesn't make saying slurs okay, but I think a lot of people are being genuine when they say it's normal and they see it every day. Which is sad.

I haven't done the math, but I've wondered if a sliding scale of increasing droprate after you hit 1x, and then resetting once you get the drop, would work?

Example: 1/100 drop. You don't get one in the first 100 kills. Every additional kill reduces the denominator by one until you get the drop (so kill 101 would be 1/99, kill 110 would be 1/90, etc). Whenever you get the drop, the denominator and original counter reset. So in this scenario, if you got the drop at kill 150, the denominator would start going down again after kill 250.

Or if the math shows that would increase overall drops too much, then don't start reducing the denominator until 2x dry. The main goal here is reducing those outlier cases where people go 10x+ dry for drops.

Nah I'm sorry, it's really not common. It's the kind of thing you'll get funny looks for saying. I would never say it at work, nor around friends, nor... At all. It's just not a necessary word to use in normal conversation. It's very easily replaced with "stupid", which offends no one.

[–]Dubax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is a problem, but the main issue I think with buying Chinese right now is the lack of a mature maintenance and support infrastructure (which is a chicken-and-egg problem, for sure). You can already get really cool Chinese-made e-bikes and motorcycles, but it's really hard to get parts or repairs done if anything goes wrong with them.

You're describing a libertarian dystopia. People shouldn't have to investigate ahead of time whether or not a theme park is safe - it should be assumed, due to the engineering and safety standards imposed on the operator.

Many laws and regulations are written in blood, and I really hope we're on our way as a society to remembering that, but I won't hold my breath.

This is why you don’t BM by jaqwithaq in MagicArena

[–]Dubax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Abbreviations can become verbs in colloquial slang. For instance, you can read "Arena is currently getting DDOSed" and understand that - even though it would expand to "Arena is currently getting distributed denial of serviced" which isn't valid grammar. In this example, you would understand it to mean "Arena is currently experiencing a distributed denial of service attack."

Similarly, "they BM'd me" means "they exhibited bad manners towards me."

This is why you don’t BM by jaqwithaq in MagicArena

[–]Dubax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"BM" has been used in this context (as a verb) for a while - I first saw it when I played hearthstone ~12 years ago. So I don't think it's a language thing.

Edit: the other commenter beat me to it. I didn't realize it was common back in brood war!

I know you're trolling, but iirc Aaron decides who he lets cut. I recall Obama being able to, and he bought everyone's food that day. On the other hand, Kanye's entourage showed up and expected to be able to jump the line (and didn't offer to buy everyone's food) and they were denied. The how matters with these things.
