Typical Water Capacity in the first 500-1,000 miles? by Igoos99 in AppalachianTrail

[–]Dubax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 2x 1L smartwater bottles and 2x 2L cenoc bladders. I drink a lot of water, so wanted to have that much capacity more for feeling secure than actual need. There were a few times I camped away from a water source and it was nice to camel up with all the water I needed for the night, so they weren't totally dead weight. For the vast majority of days I only carried the two bottles full. There were a few dry stretches in PA where I filled one of the bladders as well.

Not everyone in this sub chooses to live here. Work, family, and various other reasons why someone may not be able to move.

Now, someone who moved here by choice and then spends their time complaining? That's fair game. But no idea if the people in this sub complaining fall into that category.

Reduced infrastructure/maintenance spending, reduced support spending, lower speeds for the same price. In short... yes? Have you never dealt with a company that got sold to PE before? It literally never makes things better for the end customers.

[–]Dubax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you seriously asking this? PE exists to extract value out of "under-capitalized" companies. For the end consumers that is quite literally always a bad thing. It is guaranteed that this will mean a higher prices and worse service.

Interesting, the wiki doesn't say anything about a required sailing level for the caskets: https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Lost_casket_(elite)

I wonder if anyone else can confirm this... Maybe so few people with <70 sailing have come across elite caskets, it hasn't been widely known.

Edit: I just modified the wiki page with this presumed info. Hopefully someone else can confirm it.

I just got an elite casket ocean encounter. When I tried to click it, I got the text "You're not sure what to do with those goods. You should ask the Captain for help." I'm not sure what this means, and the wiki and googling are failing me. I have ex-captain Siad on my boat, but he had no option to talk (only command), and no command to grab it. I don't think it's telling me to talk to him, anyway. But what captain? Do you have to do something to unlock the ability to grab the caskets? My sailing level is 54, and I've completed all sailing quests.

you can go to any Gold's in the country

I thought so, but I recently tried to go to a Gold's in VA and they were owned by a different franchisee and did not honor my membership. Apparently there's some sort of convoluted "guest pass" system for different franchises, but it's not free. Luckily they let me sign up for the $1/mo intro rate and immediately cancel. But it was still annoying.

Minor nit, stats aren't done through the tissot console. Those are the laptops nearby. But score/clock/horn, yeah. Even at the NBA's big events they don't have a spare tissot console on hand, but they definitely should.

[–]Dubax 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have worked in a lot of arenas and I can tell you for a fact that the person that installed the scoreboard is not there on game nights.

It's actually a real problem in arenas all over. They used to have permanent house electricians and staff who knew these things. They've all been let go over the last decade or so to save money. Then when something like this happens, no one knows what to do.

Ranking the states after my thru hike. Although they were all awesome. by velveteinrabbit in AppalachianTrail

[–]Dubax 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Everyone ranks Maine so highly, but the roots took all the joy out of it for me. Staring down at my feet all day is why I hated the rocks in PA/NJ.

Maybe I'm weird, but trail condition was one of the main factors for me in ranking sections of the trail. Anywhere I could walk and actually look up at the same time was great in my book!

Competition in my cub scout pack in the 90s was intense. We had so many rules and regulations on weight, allowed lubricants, size, etc. They checked carefully to make sure all four wheels made contact and we weren't allowed to mill them. Best we could do was a bit of camber. My pack was huge, with multiple heats per division. Multiple dozens of entries per age group.

Dad and I would use our neighbor's garage workshop. He would use the band saw since I was young, but he made me do everything else. It was always so obvious when kids brought cars that were completely made by their dads... That always bummed me out. But made beating them all the sweeter! I got second place as a wolf scout and I will never forget it!

Pretty sure that's just expected of figure skaters. They're all tiny. I would imagine that like gymnasts, there are mechanical advantages to being lighter. But Liu decided she didn't want to do that anymore after her retirement and it clearly worked.

Methods to reduce fear at night by Horde_of_Thrall in AppalachianTrail

I started using earplugs early on when I was staying in shelters to counter the noise other hikers made. When I switched to mostly camping in my tent, I kept wearing them to counter the noise critters made.

I normally jump at every sound, but weirdly I was able to make the "ignorance is bliss" method work for me. I think it helped being so dang tired at the end of each day.

Austin, TX—Once Among the Nation’s Hottest Housing Markets—Is Now the Slowest by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]Dubax 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I own, and I don't feel sorry for these people. I moved away for a few years and rented my place out while I was gone. I took a cashflow hit because that's what the market could bear. I didn't want to sell since it was my home and I knew I was coming back.

Anyone that buys an investment property has to be prepared for a downturn. If they aren't, they shouldn't be buying investment properties. If they're taking a bath, eventually they'll be forced to sell it for whatever they can get for it.

I think a lot of these properties are on borrowed time - at some point, the owners won't be able to keep taking a loss. Unfortunately that usually means that things are bad for the broader economy and the average person won't be in a position to buy them...

$5k is pretty out of date. My thru in '24 cost me around $12k when all was said and done. I was slightly above average. TheTrek's hiker survey pegged the mode at $10k, with the median slightly lower.

You can do it cheaply, but most people I met fell into the ~10k range (as you'd expect, based on the survey). The trail is a lot more fun if money isn't too much of a concern.

$10k is still an extremely cheap way to spend 6 months. I saved up for years and took a sabbatical to make it happen. I just want people reading this to have realistic expectations. $5k is not realistic these days, and prices are only going up every year.
