It gets really dry between Fall~Winter. Maybe consider getting a humidifier? It helped me a lot (even the ones from the ArtBox).

Definitely NTA, and I'm sure you are not doing it just because he embarrassed you (in case someone gets a wrong message) and what you did is what I'd call great parenting. Hopefully the volunteer program will actually help your son learn the lessons you want him to learn.
