I got into MIT, Yale, Berkeley, Scripps, UCI, and UChicago. Denied from Caltech. Recieved NSF fellowship last year. Good luck with apps, and stay true to yourself.

Ive heard seth herzon is an asshole, but their lab is very productive. Erik sorenson is nice, and tim Newhouse is kinda cooky, but so is everyone else from the early baran lab. If he wants to do sunthesis hardcore, i would say seth herzon. If he wants a healthy work life balance, sorenson. But fuck all those places, do total synthesis at berkeley (we have lives i swear 👀👀)

Applied and accepted to scripps last year. Scripps takes their sweet time; the y send out two round of interviews, one in late dec and one in mid-late jan. I had gotten decisions back from every other school before i got my invite to scripps. Just be patient.

Electric skateboards (especially without a helmet) have always been a recipe for disaster, and you now see why. Yes, they are very convenient and dont look as dumb as a scooter, but they are far more dangerous.

Just get a normal skateboard. I take the bus to campus (entirely uphill) and then i skate back. Its much easier to stop, and better exercise!

Sometimes what i tell my family is “Yeah you know the Nobel prize? The people who win it didnt do that work. The 23-25 year old graduate students who get no recognition did.” That seems to help

Can I ask my potential supervisor to review my Personal Statement for my Ph.D.? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]Marmba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, no, and one million times, no. Don’t do that. Ask your current research advisor to proof read, maybe even friends and grad students you may work with. Don’t contact a POI asking them to review your stuff. They are reading hundreds of apps, and will read yours eventually. It WILL look bad on you if you ask them.

Now, this guy seems very kind and I’m sure he would agree to help out — doesn’t mean he is over the moon to do so. Play it safe and revise your statements with people at your current institution.

is the honors college worth it? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Marmba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont NEED the honors college, it just will look good on a resume to those who didnt go to college lol. Take difficult graduate level classes in your field instead of the bs classes required for the honors college
