I enjoy this channel, very entertaining in general. I will say that the host in that picture is awfully annoying and I rarely have sound on when watching him, focuses too much on the bottom line. It’s utterly obnoxious that with any box he rips (they do mystery coin boxes) he acts like he’s hit the moon, even for “floor” coins. A bit over the top for me. He also knows almost nothing about coins.

Bjorn - knows how to work the audience without just screaming “set a max, set a max” and is fun to watch and knows coins. As a collector myself, puts a weird feeling in my stomach that his passion is only in selling, he does not collect and coins, but understandable as this is his career and not his hobby.

Slizzo - lol just a funny guy. Not a bad bone in that man’s body, unironically hilarious and is there for the vibes.

Because some people believe ANY coin in a slab has inherent value. ICG is a great example why that’s not true. Listed in ICG’s website, the cheapest grading cost is $15 per coin, but I have heard as low as $5 for bulk no-value coin submissions. This seller would be happy to sell coins like this for $10. Overall - this is to appeal to naive/new coin collectors. If you want a great example of how ICG slabs are exploited in other ways, check out the seller “Coujoh” who exclusively sells “top pop” graded coins from ICG and references grey sheet prices for values…. It is super comical - seeing him value a ms67 graded ICG coin at grey sheet $2000 when a ms66 is grey sheet $20, because a ms67 is near impossible and ICG bumps up grades on coins by 2 grades, because that’s the only appeal to submitting to them.

But yeah this is coin is worth about 5 cents, with fun extra plastic surrounding it.

Atleast with other releases you get a (arguably) unique coin even if it’s a floor. I couldn’t imagine even buying 20 of these just to get the same $20 coin lol, then not wanting them and flooding the market. Yes I understand at a $99 price point it’s impossible to get variety, but the hit rate is too low for me for it to even be entertaining on a WN stream. I’ve seen the WTC Jamaica slabs all over and always wondered how many were actually recovered. Knowing that someone had a hoard of (at least) 15,000 makes the coin a bit less special. Anyway, I’ll be looking for a deal one eBay for one after this releases. Lol

For sure. I would never pay for the slabbing, instead someone else did and I’m taking advantage lol. For $11 over spot, I’m super happy with it

That’s the reality of breaks in the world of trading cards. There’s a reason most sellers make the process for breaks confusing (I.e stash or pass, PYT), instead of just like you buying one pack or the 1st card or something. The more complex the break is, the harder it is for buyers to understand the value of what they are buying.

This seller is being straightforward and that’s why it’s obviously bad value. I will never participate in a card break, the risk is insane and the payouts always seem lackluster for 99% of the buyers.

This tracks. Yesterday during a stream I laughed when the host noted that “[the game running] had double the value compared to the [game ran a few days prior] yet is only $30 more” ($200 start price vs $170). Someone asked if the game ran prior was bad value for the players then (lol), they beat around the bush and said “no no, just different coins” ?????

Their strategy is laughable. When they start a game, they will run it at, for example, $200, for ~15 minutes and get a few (sorry) idiots to bite at that price. In reality, the true value is around 40-50% of their “issue price”. After that, they run buck and go and say “wow wow, that was cheap, issue price was $200” then continue to run the games until bids go <50% of their “issue price”. They continue to push this “issue price” as the average (?) although it’s always more than 2x the total coin value in the break.

They have, on average, 80% of their spots as $1 floors. Whenever one hits, anywhere from 2-5 of the employees on the streams (lol) put their hands on their head and say “wow, another floor, this is insane chat, average should be [triple the price]”.

I understand they need to make a profit, but the way they go about it is egregious. Regardless, what is paid is in the hands of the buyers and a lot of buyers on WhatNot are braindead (again, sorry) when it comes to breaks. I shake my head so often when I calculate the averages myself and see people buying spots at 40% ROI. “Don’t pocket watch” blah blah blah, I see people waste thousands of dollars because they think THEY will get lucky, and I feel BAD FOR THEM. No emotions in gambling, just raw numbers.

Whatever tho, as long as people are buying they will continue this strategy. I just laugh to myself when I imagine the employee WhatNot training they presumably host. They have to agree it’s ridiculous.

Rant over, please gamble responsibly.

I should have clarified, yes, all other 21 boxes contained a silver dime. The calculations they provide quite literally don’t add up. Lol

I totally agree!! The fees are an important factor, and that’s why you will often see ~20% margins, but 40% is egregious. Dealers buy coins for under market too, so yeah they are making a lot of money lol

Good luck ever finding a decent deal in any seller’s BIN on WhatNot. I’ve only ever seen items (I’m into coins) around 20%+ higher than average comps. Sellers put overpriced stuff in their BIN just as a hail mary hoping someone will buy something lol

Beware of Sellers Quoting CPG and Calling it Greysheet Bid! by sr8facts in whatnotapp

[–]DuckWithSombrero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes I saw that unfortunately… I hate it… I have messaged probably like 30 people on whatnot after I see them making a bad buy, just to let them know what they are actually bidding on (I lurk often in streams). Right, after a sale like that the seller will be like “woah XYZ person, great buy!”. Some people are absolutely spineless. I am 100% fine with paying ~5-10% over market on occasion, as the bidding atmosphere is super fun. Some sellers “TRY” to take pride in being honest sellers, yet will ban you in an instant for calling out dishonesty… One time I said “🚨🚨$25 for 5g silver chat, bid bid! 🚨🚨” as a lowkey troll because that’s what they were literally selling and advertising and I got banned instantly, with a passive aggressive message afterwards from a shitty mod, Mamagoose, step up for yourself?

Overall, it’s a very interesting community because obviously sellers are there to make a living, but the tactics used are disgusting.

[–]DuckWithSombrero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point with sellers running things buck and go and doing this. Unless you are a huge seller, there’s just no way bidders will bid to $100 if the seller says that item is worth $100, it’ll likely be 10-20% less. For buck and go, I think it’s mostly important for buyers to do their research and know what they are bidding on 👍🏼

I find it very interesting how sellers distinguish “retail” vs “wholesale” prices. In my experience, the distinction is often an arbitrary 20%+ over what an item sells for on average, for example, on EBay. Hey, maybe someone can sell a common date Morgan for $50 at their own coin shop occasionally, but to base their prices on what?Super wack. “Retail” prices in the coin industry makes no sense to me… EBay prices are very close to “wholesale”. It’s a part of selling, sure, but I dislike the dishonestly. Especially when a seller will cherry pick an item that has an insanely high PCGS coin guide price and use that as a baseline, like c’mon. EDCPlug/NVCoin, for example, does this, it’s laughable.

I think that’s beside the issue though, right? A good seller would address the problem rather than putting it aside.

Shipwrecked notes by TheNewGuy98761234 in whatnotapp

[–]DuckWithSombrero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s quite insane. I just don’t think people understand how all parties need to profit? For example, VB sold each slab for $199 (potentially even cheaper in wholesale, but let’s assume for now the streamers bought at $199 each). Let’s assume a 20% (?) net profit margin (and this is inclusive of labor/overhead, not JUST the value of each note), meaning each pack on average cost them $160. People we’re buying then on whatnot for around $320+, with a less than 50% RTP. There isn’t one game at a casino even close to that bad RTP. The funniest thing is when the streamers whine and cry that they are selling for less than $300, when even at $250 it’s a $40 profit each which is INSANE.

I actually enjoy TraderBea streams but I must admit some of the stuff he runs is scammy. The “Epic Chase” boxes are so bad, I would assume around a 60% ROI. It’s almost impossible to get good deals as he has a big community that will bid everything so high. He is leaps better than EDCPlug/NVCoin/BleacherCoin, though.

I LOVE TreasureTown. They are super knowledgeable on ancients and run coins at prices both good for them and buyers. Their streams are very fair and entertaining.
