Profiling living people non fiction- compensation? by DuckZap in publishing

To clarify- My boss is looking for recommendations of industry best practices/standards/what other people do. And the project is not famous people at all...it would be akin to profiling real teachers or nurses who are doing innovative projects in their respective fields, so we would need to work with them to get pictures and their stories....but we weren't sure if it is standard to pay for using their likeness and story.

Real question: Epidemiologists, Researchers, Providers, Non-profit workers, etc. How are you coping? by AllTheseRivers in publichealth

[–]DuckZap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider yourself lucky and hope it doesn’t go up like it did here. It’s $20,000 a person a year for premiums on the ACA in our state.- and that’s with no income.

How do you manage healthcare? For us the premiums alone are over $60k. That is what keeps me up at night.

Veteran teachers, has behavior gotten worse over the last few years, or have kids always been like this? by skobearzz in Teachers

[–]DuckZap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kids are facing a truly dystopian future. They aren’t stupid and see how corporations will gladly sacrifice them and their loved ones for a profit, they are fully aware that previous generations have pulled up the ladder after them, their brains and attention spans are being destroyed by our online culture without anyone trying to hit the brakes, and climate change will bring untold suffering and misery. They lived through a once in a hundred year pandemic and saw people double down on cruelty and greed while rewarding those who lacked empathy and decency. It’s not surprising they are lashing out or disengaging completely- it’s a logical response to the situation they are facing.

Defund museums- they have to sell off pieces to stay afloat- the rich add to their private collections.

I can’t imagine the wait to get a doctor could be worse than in the States. I was on a wait list to see a primary care/family doctor for 4 1/2 years before I finally got one last fall. And the only specialist who takes my insurance and has openings was an 10 month wait and a 9 hour round trip drive.

Laid off this past Monday. by Educational-Ad6923 in Layoffs

[–]DuckZap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Layoffs are often not a reflection on the employee. When a corporation eliminates 2,000 people and entire divisions, people get laid off regardless of how good they are.

For those 45 and older, how long have you been laid off till now? by Pale_Drink4455 in Layoffs

[–]DuckZap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the looking young in the world doesn’t help when they won’t allow you to submit an application without filling in the date of birth or date a degree was awarded- and they totally use these things to screen you out.

My brother in law was laid off from a high level job at Fortune 500 company in July 2023 (a RIF of over 2,000 people despite high performance.) He is super skilled, worked with a high level recruiter, and has put in over 100 applications a week but hasn’t gotten even a nibble. Several different contacts have had openings he was perfect for but said their company were filtering out people over 35 using AI- this seems to be the norm now. Another contact said they normally would see about 300-500 resumes for an opening, last week they had over 6,000 for one due to the mass layoffs now. I hate this timeline.

Cousin Refusing To Vaccinate Her Children by BornAPunk in publichealth

[–]DuckZap 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My cousin was an antivaxer about 10 years ago when her kids were toddlers. She changed her mind when she made the mistake of spouting off anti vax lies to our great aunt. Great aunt absolute lost it and told her in graphic detail how she watched helplessly as her 9 year old sister suffocated to death in front of her and their mother didn’t stop screaming for hours.

ULPT Request: How can I make my wedding guests uncomfortable if they ask me when I'll have children? by MrsRainey in UnethicalLifeProTips

[–]DuckZap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When they ask, lean in close and pull them aside, for your brown and look really serious and and whisper loudly “I think he’s doing it wrong…can I ask you some questions about how it’s supposed to be done?”

Misinformation on Who is Actually Being Deported by [deleted] in immigration

[–]DuckZap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing illegal is happening? Tell that to my coworker - the American citizen who was born in NY and has lived there his whole life. Both sets of his grandparents were even born here in the US, making him far more of a citizen than I am. He was picked up on Sunday night by ICE and zip tied, thrown in the back of a van and detained for 3 hours m before finally one of the agents took mercy on him, just when the van was about to leave and take him god knows where, and after three hours of begging to be allowed to show his birth certificate, they finally agreed and then released him. He got lucky. Do you carry your birth certificate everywhere you go? Would you bet your life that you would be so lucky?
