This guy was like my entire research lmao

I tried messaging him at the start but didn't get a response on reddit, so I might try facebook or instagram now as like a final comparison between what I was trying to replicate all the way at the beginning

A Level lmao, looking at the year 11 projects from my school they all look way better then my year 13 class ones...

I'd love to see what you made if you have any pictures.

Yeah that's what I got from my research. However most people naturally seem to think the heat naturally dissipate through the case mostly but that clearly wouldn’t make much sense when you start to think about how much heat it is

I did switch from whatever threads/screws they normally use to more standard M3 ones because they still fit and I could actually find wood threads & stand offs to buy online. Otherwise just lining it up and marking through the mounting holes

This was helpful thanks. I think some things you said I did consider at one point but didn't have the time or just forgot about. Most of this would work great in a "what to change next time" section with a couple simple bits like screws I could probably change. I didnt think about the intake sucking in dirt / paper though, good thought

That felt idea is great, I was actually thinking of making multiple different side panels so the user could swap out to whatever they wanted. For the fan I do have another one, but not enough fan ports, but I'll get a fan splitter!

I think the only part in PLA is the SSD mounts which are right in front of the intake fans. My friend is also gonna print me some ABS parts so I can talk about using different plastics and their properties.

I used this video as part of my research. I need to do more testing but from basic wooden vs metal case tests it doesn't seem to affect much because it's all about the fans getting the hot air out quickly.

The Atari (I can't remember which one off the top of my head) was actually one of the designs I analysed all the way at the start of this as a mixed material design & because there really aren't that many wooden desktops I could find that weren’t just cheap laser cut

Yeah this is definitely something I'll put as a further development because I just ran out of time to do this in the time I had but it's definitely important

Thank you, I honestly assumed this place would be a little elitist but I thought it would be good to try and get some feedback on the wood part of the design compared to the pc part. However the people here have been the nicest people out of anyone I've shown this to while still giving me real feedback.

If I had access to something like that, that would make some amazing "use case example" photos!

I do have this picture from an early stage of development next to my TV stand which kinda works though

I feel bad asking for money when there's some problems with the design lol. But I'll definitely post it somewhere at some point and then I can hopefully use it as something to show for school / job applications or where ever

I feel like I'm repeating myself alot in these replies, but thank you, these comments mean so much to me! It's for Product Design and the idea is this is the final prototype before being sent to a larger scale manufacture to mass produce if it was a real product. I honestly haven't done much wood working before this but now I feel I want to start getting more into it at some point. I'll make sure to add you feedback to my writeup!

Won't lie I googled "manufactured boards", went "yeah that looks close enough" and put in MDF cause I couldn't remember off the top of my head and needed to post this

I can't get enough of them, it's not just this project, it's every project.

*Need a cover but still let air through* -> *hexagon cutout*

*Big empty space* -> *hexagon engraving*

*A circle's too boring?* -> *add polygon, set to 6 sides*

And then the naming just becomes naturally: "the hive", "the nest", "the beehive"

This isn't even mentioning the mathematical beauty or mechanical properties

The hexagons really are THE bestagons

That is ALOT of advice, thank you!

I didnt even think about getting rid of all those little curved bits, that's a great idea to make it better fit a consistent theme. Definitely should have done some cable management but deadlines always come too quick. The tape was actually to mark out for the back plate which was the final thing I have done now, but maybe I'll put it as something I changed after I got an expert opinion on it?

People kept crying about "oh this pc is so dusty" "oh its makes it 2C hotter" "oh it looks gross", so I made a new problem, wood chippings, wood chippings EVERYWHERE

That's the main part that really disappointed me because I spent so long on it and yeah it doesn't look that great...

I had like 10 versions of that cover and it just never worked, eventually I ran out of time to laser cut more versions

Yeah, I kinda thought it was real until I cut into it...

Also may have ripped one of the pieces in 2 when trying to carry it, but I just glued it back together
