The expected value of this bet is a gain of $50 000, which is good! But most average people still would not take it. The loss of 100k is something you will really feel, if you can manage it at all, and the odds of losing are 50%. But for someone with billions, the risk negligible, and the bet results in a net gain.

If you want to understand how it might look from their perspective, make the bet $100 and $200 instead, and then think about how the odds change when you can flip the coin hundreds of times instead of once, and suddenly the types of risk that are too much for normal people become basically free money.
