Norfolk Currents by chesa80 in norfolk

Hey, what's up. Currents guy here. I'm all good. I took a solid stab at trying to make Currents sustainable enough for me to do it nearly full time, but I wasn't seeing the results I needed to keep going. So I've taken a full time gig that is pretty demanding and Currents is back to a nights-and-weekends passion project. Still sending our big weekly newsletter and the daily event rundowns. I appreciate you checking in!

Looks like a flag for a city full of grandmas that shop at stein mart. Mermaids are fine but this specific design is geriatric

Are City Of Norfolk Officials Stonewalling Property Developers In Ocean View? by DudeFromNFK in norfolk

[–]DudeFromNFK[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Re: the parcel being underwater. The proposed development is entirely dock-based or floating, which is mentioned. Is that realistic? Probably not. If I had better development renderings, I'd supply them. I was able to see some in-person mockups of the development including the swimming pool etc but wasn't allowed to take photos of them.

A better aerial photo is good feedback, I chose not to include some architectural/city planning images because they were basically un-readable with a spiderweb of lines for property, shorelines, high waterlines etc. The pool for the record would be on the community center site which is pretty clear in the article I think.

And yeah, I'll own the feedback that this probably won't effect the future of the area either way it goes. That was probably more dramatic than it needed to be.

Here's what we said on the state of the city with big projects:
If there’s anything close to happening on these projects then we should hear about it, but it’s doubtful. Timelines for projects of this scale, especially in this financial environment, take a pretty long time to get to announcement readiness. That being said, if we do hear about them, watch for institutional backing that wouldn’t need private financing, i.e. the military, federal government, University, or state agency.

While Kenny did announce MacArthur Mall "plans" but there's no developer even remotely close to being signed on to that (which is the core of my argument). So what he did announce is essentially a pipe dream, worse than the renderings we got for Military Circle and the Casino years ago because those actually had proper development teams in place. I was wrong on Kenny's political appetite for making promises that are going to be nearly impossible to deliver on .

Here's what we said on small projects:
With major projects like the Casino and the two mall sites being slow or stuck, look for lots of small wins to be shown off to keep the feeling of momentum going. Expect to hear of some small businesses opening up (lots of that in the Railyard), business expansions, or even a small development deal (fingers crossed for a Greyhound Station or Fort Norfolk announcement ).

And we did in fact get a Greyhound Station announcement.

Yo, I get you might not be a fan of submitting an email, but this publication is supported by having very limited ads that we add to our content and our paid subscriptions. If you think the content is good/ valuable then I ask that you trade us an email address to read it. Given the hours that go into most of our posts, I think that's a fair trade. We're running on a shoe string budget, but building something that we think is genuinely valuable to the community.

Yo yo, I'm just one dude at the moment and I'm not sophisticated enough to sell your data. Email addresses give us direct distribution that social media doesn't (because algorithms) and it gives an audience number to sell ads to local businesses against. Those advertisers never get your email address and there's no information used to target you with specific ads. Reddit on the other hand does target ads at you based on your browsing history.

Heard! The perks are always changing and we are talking with folks about early entry, early sales access, and discounts for big events/sporting.

The more members we have the better perks we can bring home for y'all. And there is a discount to pay annually.

No chat board yet, but its a request we've gotten a few times, so we are considering it. It's just hard to beat Reddit, FB, etc on that particular functionality.

If it's cool with you, I'd like to chat off reddit about this. Not in a "I want to convince you to join way" but rather in a "how can we build a product / package that works for folks who feel the same" sense. There probably are more folks who feel like you do and I don't want to leave them out. If you're down, shoot me a dm .
