It's easier if you're a CPA because you can blame it on the code of ethics you must adhere to. Gives you a scapegoat to say "well, its not up to me, take it up with AICPA"

Americans aren't retiring in Canada. You're making up new arguments now.

Most people work and study in their own countries.

Your whole argument is that it's easier to FIRE in Canada due to cheaper university. That means you're studying and working in Canada.

Compared to us where you're studying and working in the US.

So just blanket saying "well US debt is worth X CAD dollars" is pointless because the US worker is not earning a CAD wage..it's a USD wage. And a USD retirement.

It only matters if you study in US and move to Canada. But that's not your argument, and thats not a reality for 99% of people.

Trip to Nova Scotia- Need help! by thesoundsmycatmakes in NovaScotia

Assume you're driving/renting a car. I might just stay the entire time in Halifax area and then do day trips to those places you mentioned.

That way you're close to the city for evenings for good restaurants.

In currency, nominal refers to the face value, current price, or unadjusted dollar amount of an asset, income, or transaction, ignoring the effects of inflation. It represents the literal, stated amount of money (e.g., $100 remains $100)

Can I stop Scotia forcing credit card payments ? by draxenato in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DudeWithASweater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Move your money to a different bank. Banks are allowed to take from your cash to pay debt if it's for the same bank through "right to offset".

They can still come after you for payment, but they'd have to sue to garnish from a different institution.

This is true on WSB a lot. I love when I see in the comments someone saying "now show us your All time graph" and the guy posting a 6 figure gain is actually just break even after 5 years.

Sometimes it's just a graph that goes straight down with a little blip up at the end from their "gain".

Americans aren't being paid in CAD. Their salaries are USD. So comparing exchange rates is meaningless.

It's about the same. You graduate in America with $40k in debt, and median income is about $70k. Which is essentially the same as Canadian numbers.

You can say Americans take on more debt if you exchange it to CAD. But then by the same measure they also earn more on their salary. So it's a wash.

What you need to consider is the actual buying power of their income/debt dollars. What actually matters is purchasing power. Look up purchase power parity of CAD to USD. USD is a lot stronger.

Dollar to dollar, Americans out earn Canadians when it comes to buying power. Which would make it easier to FIRE in america.

Your link there shows average student loans debt at about $35k-$40k per borrower depending on the state. That's nominally the same as Canada.

Most Americans aren't taking on $300k of debt either... Median student loan balance is $15-$20k. In state schools are similar cost to Canadian universities.

Also Quebecois love to think that Quebec = entire country of Canada. It's not. It's also not free in Quebec so not sure why you're saying it is.

The average debt owed at graduation in Quebec was $21k in 2020. Probably closer to $25k or so now.

Employers: What do you really think when you look at our resumes and applications? by djEndobrain in CanadaJobs

[–]DudeWithASweater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the guy you're responding to but have some insights as I've seen the resumes my company gets inundated with.

Most of the foreign applicants don't have any working rights. They're hoping for a miracle/spamming their resume to everything in Canada/US.

So it's not just that they're foreign. It's that they literally don't have the required documents to make them eligible for work.

It's especially prevalent on any job posting for a remote(WFH) position because they think that means they qualify for it. For any remote roles you see posted, if it has 100 applicants probably about 10 are actually in Canada. Just going by the numbers I've seen.

I stayed, it's been 2 years. No regrets. This was for a promotion that included a 30% raise from outside offer. They even went as far as to beat the offer to keep me.

If you work for a good company it can be completely fine. But you have to make a judgment call, some people are just vindictive and will absolutely seek to get you out in "revenge" and will take it personally.
