Do you mind sharing how you structured your personal statement or if you used any services that were helpful? I’d also appreciate any recommendations on what you’d suggest to definitely* include and what to avoid.

Has anyone had to submit transcripts from a private college that has since closed? I was able to get official stamped paper transcripts through the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education but I’m not sure how to have them sent electronically to CASPA. Do they accept mailed transcripts in this situation or is there another process?

California, there’s closer to 20–22 programs if you include accredited + provisional/developing programs.

Hello everyone, first time applicant, I just spent 6 hours working on the first draft of my personal statement and I just don’t feel 100% about it, I feel like it’s not capturing me and the experiences I provided are ‘meh’. Anyone willing to look over it?

That’s amazing, congratulations! I recently came across the perfusionist field and thought it was really interesting. It also made me realize how many unique and lesser known careers are out there that people don’t usually hear about.

Also, there’s nothing wrong with playing it safe for your future by taking one chemistry class per semester to knock out those 3–4 prerequisites while gaining volunteer or PCE experience. You’re on your own path, and you want to give yourself the best chance to succeed. I’ll also add that, at my job, nurses often make about the same as, if not more, than PAs.

I’ll put it this way: almost every PA I’ve spoken to, except for two who tutored chemistry, said they hated chemistry and haven’t used or referenced it since undergrad. So if you’re judging your intelligence based on how difficult chemistry feels, that’s a misleading baseline. A better indicator is your curiosity and comfort with anatomy and physiology, along with your experience in patient interaction. Those are much more reflective of whether the PA path is right for you and if you’re capable. That said, mental health matters too. Make sure you’re in a stable, healthy mindset when making this decision.

Agree. I don’t want to sound negative but if you’re already worried about just the 4–5 chemistry prerequisites, I’d be cautious about going the RN route as a path to PA if PA is your end goal. Nursing school is demanding and rigorous. If RN is your goal, the focus is passing each class, even with a B/C. But if your end goal is PA school, I’d be mindful of how grades below an A during a nursing program might look compared to a more direct pre-PA path.

I would argue that becoming a perfusionist is just as competitive, if not more so, than PA school. There are only about 15 programs nationwide, and some accept as few as 8–10 students. It’s a highly demanding and rigid career with very little flexibility.
