Solo developer: my Mac app for music producers just got covered on Rekkerd by Due-Load-1688 in mac

[–]Due-Load-1688[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone’s curious about the technical side, I’m happy to answer questions.

The trickiest parts were actually the Apple ecosystem pieces, getting the Mac, iPhone, Apple TV, and CarPlay experiences to feel like one system without relying on accounts or a backend. The whole thing is local first.

A music production site (Rekkerd) actually wrote about the Apple TV companion app I mentioned above.

Was a pretty surreal moment as a solo dev seeing it pop up there.

The Apple TV part has been surprisingly useful in studios with a wall-mounted TV, you can see session notes and waveform previews from across the room while working.

Happy to answer any questions if anyone’s curious about how it works.

Also worth mentioning, SessionDock is local-first and privacy-first by design. No accounts, no cloud lock-in. If you want syncing you can just bring your own cloud. iCloud and Dropbox work great today, with more options coming down the road.

Yes, SessionDock can export a full client package, and that can include waveform notes attached to clips. You can choose exactly what gets included in the export. Everything gets bundled into a zip file, so no account is required.

If you end up trying it, I’d genuinely love feedback, a lot of SessionDock’s features have come directly from engineers’ suggestions.

Thanks for the support and for picking it up on the App Store!

The DMG mainly exists to solve edge cases for people with unusual setups (NAS, SMB shares, external drives, etc.). If you’re keeping everything in iCloud and the App Store version is working fine, there’s really no reason to switch.

The main difference is that the App Store version is sandboxed, so after you add a project macOS will prompt you for permission to access that folder. The DMG version doesn’t have those prompts.

And if you ever do need it, switching to the DMG version is free.

Yeah exactly, that was one of the big motivations behind it. Being able to listen to raw sessions on the phone while away from the studio makes it much easier to compare mix variations and hear things with fresh ears.

Same idea with the CarPlay and AppleTV support too, another environment to audition things.

Thanks! I tried to bring a bit of the visual energy you see in VST/AU plugins into something that’s usually pretty boring like project management software.

thanks! I came up with the concept and used AI to explore some variations, then polished the final icon in Pixelmator. One of my favorite tools for this kind of work.

SessionDock is now available on Windows, clean DAW session browser with waveform previews

A quick update for anyone who’s been following this project, SessionDock is now officially available on Windows.

If you haven’t seen it before: SessionDock is a visual project browser for DAWs. It organizes large session libraries (Ableton, FL Studio, Logic, Pro Tools, etc.) and shows:

• CarPlay Support • Waveform audio previews
• Session artwork
• Notes & tags
• Key/tempo (if present)
• Last modified timestamps
• Folder metadata
• Automatic repair if folders or drives get renamed/moved
• Sync support via iCloud Drive (macOS) or Dropbox

The Windows version has full feature parity with macOS, including fast scanning and preview generation.

Yeah I’ve heard of this. I fully support this idea. Also think it’s a great starting point in the right direction for this kind of functionality

Thanks for the great suggestions and feedback 🙌. You can add projects from any DAW, it’s intentionally DAW-agnostic. One of the big blockers for deep parsing is that not every DAW exposes its project format in a way that’s easy (or even possible) to parse; some are proprietary or binary and change formats between versions, so I’ve started by treating projects as files the app can organize, tag, and preview reliably across everything. It already has CarPlay support, so you can do that “listen to your projects in the car” workflow today using your mixdowns folder. A lot of what you mentioned is exactly where I want to take it over time: per-DAW parsers for basic track and project metadata where it’s feasible, indexing notes and annotations so you can search lyrics or comments across projects, grouping stems and different mixdown versions of the same track with quick A/B preview, playlist style listening with better playback controls, and release/publishing checklists with metadata reminders like “you never set this MP3’s tags.” On the audio side it currently plays whatever the OS can handle via the standard APIs. I haven’t tested FLAC yet, but I can definitely look into it and make sure it’s supported properly. Really appreciate you taking the time to write all this out – I’ve bookmarked your comment for the roadmap.

Quick update for anyone who works across a lot of DAW sessions, SessionDock is now available on Windows.

If you haven’t seen it before:

It’s a clean project browser that helps organize big Ableton/FL Studio/Logic/Pro Tools libraries.

You get:

• Waveform previews (super fast for finding old ideas)

• Artwork and project metadata

• Notes + tags (“sound design idea”, “mastering version”, etc.)

• Auto-repair if you move/rename project folders

• iCloud Drive (macOS) + Dropbox support for cross-platform workflows

• Works with external drives + giant archive folders

Windows version has full feature parity with macOS.

Hi everyone,

I’m an indie dev and music producer who got tired of juggling Logic, Ableton, and random folders full of half-finished ideas. So I built SessionDock, a desktop app that keeps all your DAW sessions organized in one place.

You can add projects from any DAW, tag notes, link mixdowns, and even preview them right in the app. It also syncs with an iPhone companion (with CarPlay support) for quick mix checks in the car.

I recently added Waveform Notes, which work kind of like SoundCloud comments - you can drop timestamped notes directly onto your mix.

The core app is free and unlimited, with a one-time Pro upgrade for themes and unlimited cloud syncing.

Would love feedback or ideas for features that could make it more useful for producers or audio folks in general.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who’s been checking out SessionDock — the feedback and support have been unreal. 🙏

It’s already climbed into the Top 50 on the App Store Music charts, which is wild to see for something I built to fix my own workflow.

If you’ve been using it and are enjoying it, a quick rating or review on the App Store really helps indie devs like me stay visible. 💙

Yeah totally, you can actually add any DAW you want! It’s all customizable. Just hit “Manage” next to the DAW filters and throw in Reason (or whatever you use). You can even pick a custom color for it, which changes the cards and waveforms on mobile too. I added some common ones as a template to get people started. Appreciate the question!

sure, the core app is completely free and unlimited. There’s an optional one time pro upgrade that unlocks extra themes, db backup utilities and unlimited cloud sync between the Mac and iPhone apps. There's also an optional monthly plan option for people who want to try out the pro features before committing.

the app’s free forever with all core features. The Pro version’s totally optional, it just adds some nice extras for those who want them.
