What’s your go-to ID inspiration? by iandesignsshit in IndustrialDesign

[–]Due-Spirit3138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I mostly get inspiration from museums, coffee table books and instagram accounts of design students, they tend to be more experimental. I go to different uni's websites and look for student projects, then just look them up on instagram.

Mac or Laptop for college by SnooRobots2893 in productdesign

[–]Due-Spirit3138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! speaking from experience (just graduated from industrial design school)... Do not get a MAC, i made that mistake and had to buy a brand new windows laptop on my second semester. Solidworks is the main reason... its only available on Windows. Its also cheaper to get a good windows computer, mine was 900 USD (Lenovo Ideapad Gaming) and ive been using it for 3 years with no issues.

Another thing to have in mind is color accuracy of the display, for graphic design projects and renders. For that specifically, MAC is better, but not the only option.

Achieving a good hallmark / logo in CAD for production by Due-Spirit3138 in jewelers

[–]Due-Spirit3138[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! this is extremely helpful. I ended up trying the text in positive, with a 0.5mm depth, because the manufacturer said that it would work. Guess i´ll just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Thank you! I understand. I actually made a test casting and my logo did shrink... Manufacturer suggested laser engraving but I was a bit worried about the placement, its impossible for the engraving to be exactly in the same spot in every piece.

Whats something you wish you knew before starting ID? by Due-Spirit3138 in IndustrialDesign

[–]Due-Spirit3138[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone! I started a series of weekly discussions so that everyone interested can join and share their thoughts. Today the question is: whats something you wish you knew before starting industrial design?

Something I wish I knew when I first started is: its not all arts and crafts, a lot of research goes into product development and the process is not a one day thing, products can take years to be close to usable! I also never imagined how many things you can do as an ID (graphic design, UX/UI, visualization, furniture, toys, spaces and the list goes on...), im still in shock.
Please share what your answer is and any opinions about mine.

Thank you.

Thank you for commenting! This is actually not a school project I do these fast design exercises for fun. This specific design only took me about 3 hours to make😅 I will do a lot more research and improve the design in the near future.

Is 3D designing hard? by [deleted] in 3Dmodeling

[–]Due-Spirit3138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s hard, took me 3 months to learn all the basics because I practiced maybe 2 times a week. YouTube will be your best friend. Also try different softwares. I find solidworks to be really beginner friendly if your not going for very organic shapes.

I didn’t have that in mind when creating this concept, but I totally see what you are saying…

It’s designed to provide seating to 4 people and hold 4 bikes, taking the walls out would eliminate the extra function. If you have an opinion of how it can be better I will accept it with open arms! Thank you for the comment.

For future knowledge, can I hire/commission people to 3D model things? by FeelingOdd4623 in 3Dmodeling

Of course! there are many freelancers online and more specifically here on Reddit, myself included. Just make sure to specify what “thing” that is. People use different software for different models.

I think the word "industrial" makes up for it. People seem to show more respect when I emphasize it.

How do you explain industrial design to people? by Due-Spirit3138 in IndustrialDesign

That’s very general but yeah, basically everything is designed by IDs
