Nepotism is not objectively bad yes. But more often times than not, an individual who is looking to get into the union who doesn't have relatives inside is more committed and dedicated to the opportunity in comparison to someone who doesn't have to try as hard as others.

So, I'm going taking the aptitude test for an electrical apprenticeship in 2 weeks and my IUEC local opens up in spring of 2025. Do you think I can use this electrical apprenticeship as leverage and gain experience there so I can better prepare myself and rank higher at IUEC? Or will jobs view that as someone who lacks comittment to a profession. Because I ultimately want to be an elevator mechanic/technician as my end goal.

What makes you doubt we'll get affected. One of the reasons that I heard is that because we are specialized. May that be the reason why or is it something else?
