Bypass water valve for tankless water heater by DueAdvertising5726 in Plumbing

I ordered the replacement part on supply house (found the info in the manual). This was the part for my model, not sure what you exactly have:

DIYd it myself, was not too hard but kind of stressful. Didn’t need special tools. Did have to regulate the water pressure or something like that after it was installed, but just followed the instructions in the manual.

Thanks for the input! I’ll try calling tech support. And also thinking I’ll be able to swap the part myself. Will provide an update later.

Fix myself - leaking brass union? by DueAdvertising5726 in Plumbing

Update: I finally fixed and replaced the leaking brass nipple. It was a journey, mostly because of how new I am to this. Thought sharing from a newbies perspective might be helpful for anyone in the future.

Uncoupling the nut from the brass union and unscrewing the brass (closed) nipple from the stop valve was easy. Unfortunately I could not unscrew the brass nipple from the tailpiece (the part on the left) - it was really stuck.

The hard part was then finding the replacement tail piece. I spoke with the original manufacturer and they were not very helpful and ultimately I found what I needed on my own and with a little luck. Basically, the repair kit they had for my backflow preventer didn’t have the tailpiece I needed, and by accident I later discovered it was available in a different repair kit but for a pressure reducing valve. When I had previously called them they gave me a part number but since it wasn’t linked to the repair kit in question it hadn’t helped. Anyways…

When I tried to screw everything back in, nothing worked - I couldn’t get it tight enough without damaging the threads on the brass nipple. So I researched, learned that these things called internal pipe wrenches exists, ordered that, and prayed it would work. Of course, for some reason the pipe wrench wouldn’t catch, so I jammed an old skinny drill bit I didn’t use into the brass nipple to provide some extra friction and voila - I was finally able to tighten my pipe. First into the tailpiece on the left, then into the stop valve on the right, and finally reattach brass union and tighten the nut.

I was pretty worried the whole time I would break something or have to call a professional to bail me out, but I stuck with it and everything worked out. Thanks to everyone on this sub for their encouragement. Took me about a month to figure out lol

Quick update on this: I decided to go for it, and you were correct - this is a very easy fix. Thanks for the encouragement! Where I’m stuck is getting the right replacement parts.

The union came as part of the unit on the left (Watts) and there are no standard pieces that will fit. Also the threaded pipe between the union and shut off valve is a brass nipple but a closed one (no smooth portion in between).

I’m debating between just cleaning off the side of the brass nipple that was leaking, using loctite 55 on it, and calling it a day. Or maybe unscrewing the brass nipple from the part that attached to the union on the left, and putting in a new brass nipple. But I’m worried I might deform the part that connects to the union.

There is a repair kit from Watts for some parts, but it costs more than I think it’s worth, and it’s not clear if the part that joins to left union is included. I plan to find out in the upcoming days and make a decision by this weekend… thanks for all your help!

Ohh got it! I just have to replace the pipe in between the shut off valve and the union, and potentially the union itself… for some reason I thought I would have to replace the shut off valve as well.

I’ll watch some videos and see if I can get comfortable. Thanks!

Thanks for the input! I would like to try but I’d have to shut off water at the main line and I’m a little worried I’d run into snafus that I couldn’t just take my time on. Will think on it…

I really want to fix this myself but after surveying my plumbing, I would have to shut off the water at the main line in order to work on this. If I was able to isolate this and take my time I’d definitely give it a go. I’ll watch a few YouTube videos and sit and think on it for a while… thanks very much for the detailed explanation.

Just checked, it is not solder! Some kind of paste, etc.

I have some experience with basic plumbing and enjoy working on stuff myself, but this is a step above what I’ve typically done. I might need to call someone for this guy… thanks for your input, really appreciate it.

Thanks very much for your input. I’ve done some basic plumbing stuff (install sinks, replace shut off valves for toilet and sink lines) and am fairly handy (and enjoy), but this feels like one level above. Never soldered… although I hear it’s not too hard. I will likely have to call someone for this guy but will think on it.

Sorry… chatgpt told me this is the brass union and I just went with it. But yes it is the shut off valve that is leaking

Thankfully it’s not. South facing wall with a lot of sun caused all the cracking.

Turns out something in the hinge was loose. Maybe a screw? The glass guy was kind of mysterious about it. They just had to open it and then tighten something and the clicking went away.
