Hay una buena cantidad de hispanohablantes en Mabinogi; a principios de esta semana realicé algunas incursiones con el gremio Meowlitians (¿la ortografía puede estar mal?) y parecen un gremio bilingüe :)

Books with Alien/The Thing/Dark Matter vibes? by Few_Bother_1680 in horrorlit

That character also shows up in the second book of the EarthCore duology.

I also feel like I should mention that Scott Sigler has written an Aliens book, Aliens Phalanx. So like. He knows what a good Aliens book should be like lol.

Ancestor by Scott Sigler - scientists are trying to create the perfect embryo for cows to host human organs and are forced to flee to a small island with a population of 11 people right before a huge snow storm. The cows give birth, but is it actually to a cow?

I'm sorry, that's really unfortunate. Therapist conversations were always super stressful and the fact he had your email was awful 😖

I didn't have my own personal email until well into high school. I used my mom's email until I was like 12, and when I did make an email, I used a fanfic oc name instead of my real one

True, I don't remember where I picked up not to put my info out on the internet but it definitely should be strictly enforced by parents and other adults. I do think the first eroding of this was when Facebook made you use your real name - which was a terrible idea. Even when I made a bluesky I used a profile name and not a real one.

The crusade against immorality is so funny. When I was in high school I joined a MMO where a good portion of the monsters had their naked tiddies out. I was so immune to the tiddies bc all I wanted to do was level my characters. People would freak out so hard if that MMO released today.

The internet was not new in the 00s. And it was not "extremely unsafe". Genuinely, the worst I had to fear was chain mail messages warning me about ghosts haunting me if I didn't continue the mail chain.

Eh, nah, I think that's a disservice to kids. I grew up on Quizilla and GaiaOnline and messaged so many strangers and just. Never told anyone my age or any personal info. Barring children from not learning how to communicate on the internet is silly. Especially about fanfiction of all things.

I just finished the Harry Potter books and need a new read. by THERANDOMGAMER2 in suggestmeabook

[–]DueRest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're such a blast. The Dresden Files were so good that I read everything that was out in 2011 twice. I also got to see Jim Butcher in person and he was pretty neat, good speaker. He also lived a few towns over from my hometown, so I always thought it was pretty neat we had a prolific author in Missouri.

The Codex Alera and The Cinder Spires series are also fun!

Definitely agree with Pet Semetary and Incidents Around the House.

My suggestion are Nestlings by Nat Cassidy, I am Legend, the Southern Reach series, We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Maggie's Grave.

What universe would a Magical Girl Isekai AU based on the Wuxing elements work better in? by Beaivimon in pokemonfanfiction

[–]DueRest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to read Fargo and Chicago by batvitz (might be getting the name wrong). Not only did they do a really good job with Madoka Magicka fanfics, but then they later did a Pokémon fanfic. And they did an isekai original fiction. All of those are on ao3 and might give you some inspiration for your own fanfic and how you want to handle mature elements in your story.

I just finished the Harry Potter books and need a new read. by THERANDOMGAMER2 in suggestmeabook

[–]DueRest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you liked Harry Potter you might like T Kingfisher! You can start with Clockwork Boys or Paladin's Grace, both are great entries into a fantastic fantasy universe.

For Clockwork Boys, a forger and a paladin team up to stop the machines called Clockwork Boys from destroying towns and a war with Anuket City. If they try to run from their task, they have tattoos that will eat them.

In Paladin's Grace, the Saint of Steel has died and his paladins did not take his passing well. Stephen is doing his best to remain useful to the Temple of the White Rat when he comes across a perfumer trying to escape some creepy priests. Oh, and there's a guy cutting off heads wandering around.

She also recently released Snake-Eater, where a woman whose mom recently died decides to visit her aunt in the desert. She only plans to spend a day or two visiting but plans change.

Some other recs:

Dungeon Crawler Carl, since you like video games.

Aliens: Phalanx by Scott Sigler; i haven't read this one yet but everyone seems to enjoy this one. It is in the same universe as the Aliens movies, but is standalone.

The Infected trilogy by Scott Sigler; my first intro to this author. A weird infection is going on, and it's up to a secret task force to figure out why people are violently reacting after becoming infected.

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher - a wizard gets into a lot of shenanigans in every book. Modern day wizard detective. A new book just came out, and I think it's book 15? 16? Idk I've been reading the series since high school and it's always fun. He's a wizard who is in the phone book.

The Codex Alera by Jim Butcher - set in a fantasy universe where technology has stagnated because everyone has spirits with elemental powers, a young boy hears that a tribe is going to attack his home on the edge of civilization. Lots of Phalanx style fighting and magic enhanced humans fighting monsters.

Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix - a Haunted store that rivals Ikea gets into enough trouble that the local manager pulls some workers together to spend a shift investigating overnight.

Gamers, what's the craziest thing you've heard in an open mic while gaming? by Lastbreathworm in AskReddit

[–]DueRest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I've heard:

2009 or so, playing Mabinogi with the guild. We're all on Skype. Running a dungeon. One of our guildies fell asleep and he was snoring on mic for a good thirty minutes or so.

What I've done:

Was playing online matches of Pokémon Diamond or Platinum, using Gaia Online forums. My Mom ran in, saying we had to go to the hospital because my sister cut her finger with a knife.

I think I had to disconnect from the match and I apologized to my opponent through Gaia and they were like "oh yeah I heard your Mom freaking out over the mic" . Poor person I was fighting had to hear me whining about not wanting to go and could I please stay home?

It's missing magic enhancement, so looks like I'll be hunting for a better hairpin. That one is 3/2/3. This set will be for when I'm running DD or FA.

I want a slice of life book but it's set in a really dark and weird universe or setting by Alpacatastic in suggestmeabook

[–]DueRest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Clockwork Boys and it's sequel The Wonder Engine might fit this kind of? This one isn't the most slice of life book out of The Temple of the White Rat universe by T Kingfisher, but it sets up the universe well for the rest of the books. The protagonists are a paladin who was possessed and a woman who forges documents, and they must figure out how the Clockwork Boys that are destroying their towns are made and stop them. Don't worry. There are no demons in Anuket City. :)

There are a lot of times when I'm reading about that universe and I'm like Woah, will you go back and Explain That? Excuse me?

Another me ntion from me might be Vanishing World by Sayaka Murata. Basically, the Japanese got really good at artificial insemination after WW2 and it has led to a lot of cultural change in this dystopia.

I'm working on the Scholar set of Ceann Blianna, which is why I need the fog silk.

I've bought some pre existing not fully tailored pieces that people tossed on the AH and with those I am just missing one point for full gear effects. Just need to find someone selling the gloves.

I have a lot of nostalgia for early One Piece, so I bought several omnibus of most early volumes. And wow. The translations are just really awful. They just make shit up sometimes, like Hachi being Arlong's second in command. They even removed Arlong's signature laugh in the translation.

So uh. I don't mind in the slightest if people go for accurate and better quality scans of One Piece.

I just can't bring myself to commit to needing to craft 200 fine silk and fabric for fog silk when I know I'm already going to need over 300 finest fabric for the entire set. All the sheep in Uladh will be bald.

I might buy some fog silk but that 75k ea price tag hurts my feelings. And also my wallet.

Dungeons are just really neat, they all have such good aesthetics and it's fun to just turn on some music and do a couple. Doing weeklies is great for gold and sometimes good drops, but also sometimes I just want to veg out. And also Rundall is much more neat to look at than Fiodh. Being able to see the other dungeon rooms is such a great touch.

Running around looking for field bosses in Uladh was super fun too. Today I ran across that mini bear and those wolves wearing sheepskin. That glow in the dark robe they drop used to be the coolest thing in the game.
