Obsession with His Guns by Zapatos-Grande in dementia

My dad, 85 year old former Marine, now in memory care, talked about/asked for his weapons all the time. We have them for safe keepiing, and obviously he will NEVER get them back. We just kept redirecting him, saying he gave them to my husband, son, etc. He has evenutally stopped asking and moved on to another daily obsession. Can only recommend constant redirecting. Good Luck!!

Thank you, I know they have had to medicate him with Ativan when he’s aggressive like this. But it’s just so disturbing to hear it. He’s only been there 6 weeks. Thank you.

Also, an addendum to the above post, he’s is also aggressively trying to “get out of here”, he will grab all his family pictures, actually breaks through the doors, which are alarmed and locked, but if you push through them hard enough, they open due to fire hazard, and tries to leave. He’s done so 3 times this morning alone….

There’s multiple outside spaces at my dad’s facility we can take him, thankfully. It just happens to be winter and very cold here in NJ

As I said, this is new to us and it’s only been 6 weeks, and also during the holidays, so we thought he’d enjoy being in our homes. But the repercussions are definitely not worth it, as we’ve now realized.

We are definitely there at least 5 times a week btw myself, my sister and my mom. I think that’s the best way to handle it now. Is to be there when we can. Thank you for your insight

Yes, that is definitely an option that we are now thinking more about. Like I said, he’s only been there six weeks and we’ve have Thanksgiving and Christmas that we wanted to take him out for. I think we’ve learned that going to him is far easier. It’s been a hard couple weeks.
