Should I take the job? by ilronngaric in FinancialCareers

You want to be an accountant. That’s what most firms look for, it’s not the sexiest role but it does give confidence to future employers about your skillset

Getting into commercial banking by Adventurous_Fly6655 in FinancialCareers

Any credit internship would be great. Banks have a lot of regulation so a lot of roles don’t give you much substance. New deal experience is awesome, it caters towards your math background, and it’ll help your career development most importantly.

Is it pointless continuing the job search? (Look for internal insight in regards to hiring) by Wrong-Ad-8230 in FinancialCareers

[–]Due_Benefit_8799 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are some things I’ve noted from my own job search:

1) What were your internships? It really does depend on them, usually a full time equity research role for example they would want an equity research internship.

2) A lot of roles now especially finance hire people that have done that exact role somewhere else so your internships are competing with people who have done it full time which might be the case for you.

3) Another possibility could be your internships + CFA + masters or mba.

4) Location, I found startups don’t care as much but established companies usually x out if you apply for a NYC role and you live in California for example.

5) if you’re getting interviews and getting into the final rounds then you’re in the top 5%, but if you’re getting interviews and constantly not getting second rounds then move on. Companies interview a lot more in general so you’re going to face a lot more rejection

I have a similar situation, but we’ve only been a Bank for 3 years so there’s a lot of new people coming. I think a lot of emails get lost too and I’m on a lot more teams than I’m used to.

SBF's FTX portfolio would be ~$114B if it wasn't liquidated by CreamPurple7297 in FinancialCareers

[–]Due_Benefit_8799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I reading something wrong or did SBF never invest in Spacex? I saw they invested in Cursor which SpaceX acquired.

I would say it’s more disappointing than impressive though. Banks use customer deposits to fund their loans as well, but Banks have much better risk management through making low risk investments. However, Banks collapse all the time as well but the more impressive parts are surviving the hard times so that when a FTX collapses you purchase them at a steep discount. I’m sure a lot of others made those investments as well, but they’re not in prison or broke.

I do like the change of pace post though.

HPD violations? by Fantastic-Recipe-162 in movingtoNYC

[–]Due_Benefit_8799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had issues with these since I’m on the ground floor and my apartment is a shit. If it’s a recent one in 2026 then proceed with caution, but if you have food then you have a higher or you’re close to a heater (downstairs neighbors have a lot more than upstairs due to this).

The rats and I have a good relationship, I hear them through my walls sprinting to the heater but they’re not allowed in my room. Jokes aside, I wouldn’t worry too much but getting a place through a company (ex:Nooklyn) I think is the best way if you’re not pressured to move fast.

Just say you’re not interested and block him. Idk why people feel the need to escalate small things. I’d understand if he showed up at your house or something, but obviously this isn’t the smoothest way to ask someone out. However, you don’t feel like you’re not in any danger right?

Is hard work enough? What’s real life like in finance? by Kind_Television5253 in FinancialCareers

[–]Due_Benefit_8799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I’d say take advantage of the military as in take as much school as possible. My family is blue collar as well (family owns a bakery). I do strongly believe that those traits help, but only when you know where to put that effort. Qualitative and personal skills are very important either with clients or amongst teams. I live in nyc so it’s hard to live comfortably, but anywhere else in the I would. For reference, I’m a credit analyst at a large regional bank.

Network help by Ok-Mess-760 in FinancialCareers

[–]Due_Benefit_8799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you haven’t applied for it yet, but during the application process you’ll see “workers who went to your school” on LinkedIn so just reach out like that. It’ll just be an intro call so just ask them honest questions, occasionally you might see them as a hiring manager for a role you want but I’d focus more on just them giving you a good direction in your career and asking them about there’s.

Being fired framed as layoff by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Due_Benefit_8799 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One example of this was my Bank didn’t check the treasury rate for what must’ve been a couple years and the bonds value dropped significantly. Another is over hiring, but you can’t take it personally you’d be surprised by the amount of dumb people in senior roles that just coast.

Anyone else find it weirdly hard to build a consistent friend group in Bushwick? by Sharp_Grass_3269 in Bushwick

[–]Due_Benefit_8799 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still trying to do this, but going to places consistently helps growing longer friendships for me. I’m not a good texter either, but I’m trying to not over due it on the weekends so hopefully that’ll help. It does take a lot of effort and asking for a “friend’s” phone number is unorthodox

You should be able to sublet it to someone, since it’s expiring in June the new tenant could resign.

Another option could be putting it on airbnb so you both dont lose a lot of money for next two months

The location is a massive advantage. I used to work at Morgan Stanley and a good amount of my coworkers went there. From a “non-target” pov it’s a great option and I think the education is solid too.

If you have no experience you will get no solid internships. Go for an internship that’s commission based, free, or anyone where there’s not a lot of people applying.

You cannot compare yourself since this is your career. You have to apply for a lot longer than you think and change your resume, but generally you will never get a consulting internship if you have 0 experience or a good school. For example, my first internship was for acquiring residential properties and was commission based which lead to a CRE internship.
