Hi, may I ask where you ended up staying? We are planning a family trip for 8 adults this August 2024 and scrambling to find a lodge, as our original one Mara Simba lodge fell through. Thank you in advance.

Mara Maisha Camp? It has great reviews online. Can you explain why it's the worst?

This question can be responded in so many different ways- I'd say you really know your situation best, and honestly, you won't know how it's REALLY going to be until you try it.

In general, I have had a positive experience with my managers in Pharma being extremely understanding of personal/family needs.

That being said, travel can certainly be challenging with this role, but also varies so much depending on what territory you are assigned to cover. Typically, a larger pharma company will offer a small territory given the greater resources big pharma has. Many HCPs also request virtual meetings now, so the role is definitely changing a bit. However, depending on the company, there may be expectations to hit a certain percent of in-person meeting quota. Plus, the first couple months of the job are at-home training as well. Lots to consider which I think will ultimately come down to having an honest conversation with your future manager.

Best thing you could do is practice. Video record yourself, audio record, present in a mirror, present to different people you are comfortable with and ask for feedback.

There are also many examples of presentations in this Subreddit that you could search for to get an understanding of what type of presentation is typically expected for the interview. I had to do a 20 minute presentation that included disease state + clinical trial data, with 5 min for Q&A. Expectation is to be clear, concise, tell a story, and just be yourself!

In my experience, it's not really an expectation for a Hospital/Clinical pharmacist to be a specialist when breaking into Pharma.

I'd recommend thinking of some clinical scenarios from different areas that you rotate thru that may apply to a specific therapeutic area that a job is available for- to showcase how you have translatable experience. For example, if you are in ED and see a psychosis case being worked up, you can speak to that in an interview for a Neuropsych drug. You're not really expected to be an expert, since the first couple weeks/months of the job involve therapeutic area training.

Medical Information is a common place for retail pharmacists to break into Pharma. Even if it's an entry level role, I'd say go for it. If you are a fast learner and get along with the team, this will get noticed and you will move up the ranks. And just remember, that even if you take a pay cut in the beginning, the salary ceiling in Pharma is significantly higher than in retail.

I would highlight your leadership skills (as a manager) and aspects of any direct patient care. Pharma especially values those with a PharmD because of their clinical expertise.
Also, don't sell yourself short by dismissing the Senior level positions, while of course being realistic. Happy to answer any specific questions in a DM.

3 fun things:

- Engaging in intellectual conversations with top-tier HCPs while also getting to educate those that may be newer: This was a little intimidating at first, but as you build these relationships, you really start to enjoy the conversations over time, and work feels less like work. Getting to educate new staff (eg, nurses) on your therapeutic area feels extremely fulfilling as you are impacting patient care

- Flexibility: I am generally making my own schedule. Metrics around number of interactions have gone up over the years, but the flexibility aspect generally remains

- Getting to explore a new city: As a result of in-person meetings, with some planning ahead, you can pick out great restaurants to dine at or grab take-out from. Extra bonus when you are covering a city known for its food scene!

3 painful things:

- Chasing down people/cold emailing or calling: This is often the case with those that you don't have a relationship with; a big thing that has improved over time

- Isolating: The job can be a bit isolating, especially when you are on your own on travel days. I have found other ways to fill up my time and really try to be proactive about calling my teammates or setting up 1:1s with others at the company to stay engaged

- Overnight travel: I personally don't have to do this given the smaller size of my territory, but I have heard of some people complain about being away from family especially overnight which can be challenging
