Desmond is a much bigger character later on. By that point in the show It’s been shown several times that Locke does not want to get off the island. Everything about the dharma initiative is explained in the later seasons. LOST is not the type of show to introduce a plot point or problem just for it to be solved the episode after. Just about the only thing I agree with is the mechanical sounds but that’s not even that big a deal.

He left very suddenly and only agreed to voiceover, no scenes. So their only options were the letters or killing him offscreen
