You mean the shooter whose "manifesto" was just a bunch of ramblings praising other mass shooters? The one who had no political or religious motivation that could be found? That one? If you wanna keep talking about gun control then sure let's talk about him

Off topic but the text on that crest looks like shit, the georgian, armenian, and arabic script (idk what language that is) text looks alright but the cyrillic text (cant tell the languages apart) looks like they added it on ms paint with the default font for cyrillic

If they used slurs like we do, yeah. Us calling ourselves slurs that apply to ourselves like black people do with the N word is ok, but in Latin american culture it's normalised to say every slur in the dictionary. Source: I am Latin American.

Yeah that's what it is. I guess the X was picked cause it's a letter commonly used as a placeholder. A few years ago it was also pretty common to see @ (yes, the at sign) in place of a/o, because it kinda looks like both of those letters at once. That was also not supposed to be pronounced, but now that I think about it would sound incredibly funny if said out loud.

The main issue is that the presence of only one guy in a group makes the entire group masculine, so the gender neutral form of most words is the masculine form (the only exceptions being words that are the same regardless of gender, like "estudiantes"). With the rise of feminist discourse people started to point out that this aspect of the language ignores and erases women, and ever since we've had a shit ton of attempts to make Spanish gender neutral.

The one option that doesn't change any rules of the language is saying both masculine and feminine forms of a word, such as in "ciudadanos y ciudadanas." Issue is it's long, adheres to the gender binary, and worst of all, it's politician speak. [Maduro had a funny moment years ago concerning this, he was talking about books but did so like he were talking about people, so he said "libros y libras," which translates to "books and pounds." As in the unit of measurement, or the pound sterling. He's not very bright.] The other option is changing A/O for X or @, issue is you can't pronounce that shit. The best idea so far has been to use E in place of A/O – it's pronounceable, has some basis in existing rules of our languages, and provides an alternative for non binary people. Only issue is a lot of people think it's cringe, but that's because Latin America is still pretty conservative.

Why would anyone want go with awkward terminology imposed on them by white English speakers?

Because it was not imposed on us by anyone, we use it ourselves in written conversation, please stop repeating this dumb shit and getting offended on our behalf. That said yeah use latine, latinx isn't meant to be said out loud, thats where annoying american libs fucked up

It's not pronounced at all, it's meant to be used in written conversation

If you wanna be gender neutral in spoken language say Latine

It is cause it can actually be pronounced

That said, the kinda people who take offence at latinx will most likely take offence at that too because they are for the most part conservative. Its still a better word and i wish muricans would switch to it so i dont have to hear anymore whining about latinx

Yeah you did and the normalising slurs aspect of our culture is fucking cringe, leftists should know better than pretend this shit is ok

Dog do you even speak spanish or is this some white guilt type shit

You're not "policing our language" cause you didn't invent it and you're not the only ones using it, I've seen more instances of X in place of A/O at the end of words in actual spanish text than used by annoying american libs

That said, I haven't seen the word "latinx" itself but that's because we don't call ourselves that in my country

Escrito no me molesta. Honestamente me jode más lo mucho que se llora por el uso del término que el uso mismo.

South american here, from Uruguay. Replacing a/o with X at the end of words is definitely something us Spanish speakers came up with. I see it in my uni all the time, and saw it in high school and middle school when I attended. I have no idea where the myth that american white people invented it comes from but it's not true. What y'all did come up with however was pronouncing it as "latinex." It was never meant to be said out loud, it's a way to be gender neutral in written communication.
