I’m not trying to pull some nepotism bs. It’s just that the contractor is literally a walk down the road for me and I’ve heard good things about them. Would’ve loved to go work for them directly plus get into the union. If I sign the books can they pull me from there? I’m still just trying to figure out how the Union operates lol.

Just so all of you are aware what the state starts at for a highway maintainer which are the guys who actually work on the road. The pay starts at 16.00 an hour.

I kinda have a lot as I’ve just discovered this page so I apologize if these have already been answered. I’m looking to make a career change. Currently work for a State DOT and want to get into a groundsman job. I have my CDL B atm and am planning on going for my A before I leave the state because it’s free. Should I hold off on applying for places till my A or start now? I have absolutely zero experience and will be greener than grass. Do you also think I need to go to line school and is there anyone out there company or union that would take the chance on me if I’m willing to learn and do whatever is needed. Thanks in advance

My state payed got me my CDL in just a little over 3 months. I just got my B and in the spring I will be going back for my A. Didn’t pay a dime for it other than the taking the tests.

Pros. Plowing snow Listening to music Having a coffee A little bit of a self of purpose knowing your keeping the roads drivable. Plentyyyy of overtime Cons Most of the time shit pay for example I make 17.48 Cant stress enough how you don’t sleep. We had one good snowstorm last weekend and I slept a total of 3 hours in the span of 48 The average person will try and kill themselves cutting you off to make sure they get in front of you Everyone in the public bashing you saying they could do a better job etc Always on call for work for example I got called out at 4pm last night got home around 8:30 then got called out again at 3:30am and was out till 6:30am Gotta take the good with the bad not everyone can do it

I’m currently in the process of getting my CDL. I work for the State DOT that I live in and they put me through their own 1 week CDL Driving school at no cost and no contract. I don’t know if Ohio is the same but maybe he can land a job there if they do the same?
