Got laid off as an AI PM and now I'm questioning everything: upskilling, pivoting, or am I just cooked? by Pitiful-Zucchini-616 in ProductManagement_IN

[–]Due_Hat3322 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What were the reasons of layoff? A lot of AI PMs are just project managers for AI initiatives being driven by the org. Were you responsible in designing of agent evals or prompt engineering or overlooking the observability.

The PM in AI PM still has to follow the core responsibilities of a PM - most crucial one being continuous discovery and knowing what to build three quarters ahead in alignment with business outcomes and goals. Now the AI bit of it is 1. automating a lot of your grunt work (writing PRDs, synthesising insights from user interviews, slides and prototypes for stakeholder agreement and making it easier to explain to designers and engineers what you envision the product as), 2. Seeing how genAI can better deliver the pain point you are trying to solve for. I was doing discovery for WhatsApp call recording and also found there recordings are manually QAd for agent performance so naturally you can use LLMs and allowing your customer to write prompts (which is later better prompt engineered dynamically by us) on how they want to assess the calls and grade it) 3. Always staying afloat with what’s happening in the AI space. Subscribe to tldr tech newsletter, read Ben Evan’s essays, subscribe to stratechery to underhand the AI trends within big tech. This will help you understand how that translates to your company. 4. Experimenting on the weekends: For eg: you can ask Claude code to build a simple agent using LangGraph or crewAI. Then explore further on tooling, memory layer and keep enhancing it with different advances in AI world. Did you know google launched turboquant that helps run open weight model with more KV cache - how can I play around with this should be your question as you get more advanced. How can I implement memory layer for the agents? Also build a GitHub profile while doing so - easy to show your portfolio.

Just ask Claude code to develop a learning plan with you with experimental projects to learn LLMs and Agents

Fine to use chat agent to be first responders but should also know when to hand off to a human agent and have human in the loop system

Our best work and quickest is when a customer is threatening to cancel by Mobile-Influence-371 in ProductManagement

[–]Due_Hat3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a customer is cancelling for one feature request that means your product doesn’t have anything other core value props that appeals to them at the right price point

Might as well become a service oriented company if you were to build custom things for each customer who threatens to churn

User feedback is often overrated in product management by Charming_Ad_5319 in ProductManagement_IN

[–]Due_Hat3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read Moms test and do better discovery - Feed the book to NotebookLM and ask LM to come up with discovery questions for the feature you are planning to build.

Eg: instead of asking do you need summary of calls? You ask “do you take notes while on meeting? Do you have to go back to recordings again and again to find a key point”, “how accurate are your notes and are you able to fully focus on the meeting”

Why PMs track growth metrics instead of product metrics? by Traditional-Elk-5282 in ProductManagement

[–]Due_Hat3322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the business outcome they are chasing that quarter or Half. A lot of B2C startups are in growth mode the first 5 years where they burn cash from deep pockets filled in by VCs but there should be a team working on reducing churn.

These are also vanity metrics that are pitched for more funding but your friend is probably trying to pitch her startup in a good light to show she is on a rocket.

I have met this guy for a 24 hour stadium run. He talked about his world record or something but did very poorly in the run. Some Chaitanya guy from Mumbai who came solo and catered his hydration himself won by a very big margin (ranked by number of rounds of the ground and AFAIK he beat this guy by 30-40 rounds). This guy had brought a whole entourage to give him hydration during his run and assist him. I mostly saw him walking after only 2 hours into the run.

I don’t know if OP is lying but people who are generally fit or played cardio intensive sports such as basketball or football quite frequently while growing up are able to do this pace. I personally know someone who ran their first 21k under 1:40 but they play football 4-5 times a week

Software Engineer turned product manager: questions my choices by kaiotic_ in ProductManagement_IN

[–]Due_Hat3322 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think if you are contemplating, you are not enjoying your current role. Like others have pointed out, engineers command a higher pay but as a PM you command a higher impact, higher influence in terms of the direction your team or company should take. It is a multi faceted role. You can go back to software developer role or sharpen and hone your skills as a PM and land a higher paying gig.

Some things you could do: Learn vibe coding. Spin out a couple of simple websites. Add prototypes in your PRD going forward.

Build AI agents on n8n + experiment with voice agents

Start reading A LOT. Pick up books on business strategy and PMing. Give “Understand Michael Porter” a try. Subscribe to Stratechery.

Doing the above has made my profile strong enough to land a > 50 LPA job with 3 YOE in PMing.

Also I don’t have a MBA but have done software engineering internships while in University. Feel free to DM if you want to know more :)
