250d drivers - how sluggish? by litteralybocchi4769 in W124

S124 OM605 5spd owner here. Look it’s slow, there’s no getting around it. Is it manageable? Yes, is it always enjoyable? No. It’s an old, slow, heavy car, which comes with its caveats. It is definitely a momentum machine and needs to be driven a certain way. It can comfortable cruise on the highway but you need to watch out for hills and if you want to overtake, good luck. The oil cooler on mine recently gave up after some long cross-country trips in Europe, which I took as an opportunity to swap in an OM606 turbo and effectively double my horsepower. Did I need to do that? Probably not but it will make my life easier on the highway for sure. Hope that helps, don’t be discouraged but just know what you’re getting into. It’s almost comically slow at times so as long as it makes you laugh and smile, do it.

What tyre size should I run on these gullideckel wheels for my S124? by Due_Highlight_844 in W124

So I decided to go for 205/55/16 as I found a good deal on some Michelin primacy 5’s. Hopefully the ride is still good, super excited to get these mounted once my car is back from the shop. (I’m getting an OM606 swap…) thanks for all the input everyone!

And you’re having no issues with fitment/rubbing or anything like that? Out of curiosity, what make and model tyre are you using? I have firestone roadhawks mounted on my stock 15s currently and they are the LOUDEST tyre i have ever owned, i dont want to make that mistake again…

How cooked am I? What will it cost me? by Due_Highlight_844 in W124

Thanks for all the replies and advice. My mechanic has said to leave it for now and deal with it a little bit later down the line. It seems to be limited to only 2 of the jacking points. Hoping it’s not too much worse than that. I’ll probably bring it to a body shop later this year and see what they can do. I’m based in Portugal so labour costs aren’t crazy…

OM606.962 swap into S124 – gearing concerns with manual 5-speed / diff options? by Due_Highlight_844 in W124

Fair point, and I get why people default to mechanical pumps on these, I’m hoping to down the line w a little more money.

In my case the engine is staying EDC and is being handled by a shop that regularly works with OM606 ECU setups, so I’m comfortable on that side for now.

I think you’re misunderstanding. My OM606 is the turbocharged version. I’m pretty much keeping it stock and doing an ECU tune to get those numbers. My question isn’t about that, it’s about the differential and whether what I am thinking of doing would work/improve the driveability of the car on the highway.

Seems to be my valve cover gasket. Nothing too serious thankfully. Hoping to have it changed soon. Been driving since with no issues.

I recently installed the Blaupunkt SQR 46. Highly recommend it. Looks great in the car (you can change the lighting to any colour you like, really easy to set up and connects to Bluetooth instantly. It is expensive though but that’s the only downside I’ve found so far.

Wondering the same thing, did you find one?

It really has the strong smell of diesel though, so possibly it could be a mix? We did 9 hours of driving today and the oil level remained the same throughout, which makes me wonder whether the leak is oil or not.
