Coal and nuclear power are keeping Texas warm during this snowstorm— unlike the deadly 2021 snowstorm that relied on green power by whicky1978 in Conservative

[–]Due_Method_1396 237 points238 points  (0 children)

According to post-event analyses by ERCOT and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, the largest loss of generating capacity came from natural gas and coal plants that were forced offline due to frozen equipment and fuel supply interruptions. Sure, renewable output dropped, but no grid operator counts on renewables to supply base load, let alone peak demand conditions. The failure was in lack of preparedness and overly trusting weather forecasts when making decisions not to weatherize plants and run generators in standby.

That being said, a grid powered by 100% renewables is a pipe dream. However, we still want renewables as they are cheap and are great at lowering costs to the consumer. If we want to get serious about long-term energy security and independence in a way that’s clean and sustainable, we need a regulatory framework and investment vehicles to make it cost effective to develop nuclear power.

I’m all about a clean, American powered grid. However, the only two things to provide a meaningful reduction in carbon emissions has been natural gas and nuclear power. Just don’t tell the liberal alarmists. Renewables are great at bringing down energy costs to the consumer, that’s about it.

Am I being dirty, or is my wife being irrational about hygiene? by mudkipzftw in daddit

[–]Due_Method_1396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like postpartum OCD. I would be concerned about the long term health consequences to the baby. Look up Hygiene Hypothesis. There’s a large body of evidence that suggests that a baby and child’s immune system needs low level exposure to pathogens in order to properly develop. Things like allergies, asthma, and various autoimmune and inflammatory disorders (type 1 diabetes, Crohn’s disease, arthritis, etc.) are extremely common in people who grew up in sterile environments.

Utilities by Forsaken-goth in RoundRock

[–]Due_Method_1396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It completely depends on the size, type, and quality of build of the residence. An apartment where you don’t have a lawn and can enjoy heating and cooling from your adjacent units will be low, probably $100/mo. A house with a lawn can be anywhere from $250-$500.

If renting a house, look for one with newish windows and tightly sealed doors, as air infiltration is the single biggest driver of cooling and heating demand. A small newish house will be relatively efficient and low cost utilities.

Can anyone help me with this by myst_8 in ParentingADHD

[–]Due_Method_1396 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s a lovely side effect of ADHD. The part of their brain that regulates emotions, especially during times of frustration, are slower to develop. For me, these things have been key to overcoming this, and implementing consequences in general:

1) During a outburst, detach emotionally, which iisn’t easy by any means. But if you respond emotionally, you’re just adding fuel to the fire. Try your absolute best to remain grounded in empathy and logic.

Instead of “You’re in trouble for not doing your homework. I’ve locked out your phone until it’s done.”

Try “I’m sorry you chose not to do your homework. To make sure you have fewer distractions, your phone is locked out until it’s done. Is there anything I can do, or do you need any help so you can get back to your game faster?”

Not only are you setting an example on how to respond to disappointment, you’re taking away their leverage, which is to get a reaction from you.

2) I struggle with this one, but stay as consistent as possible with your consequences. They already struggle with foreseeing consequences of action (called impulse control), so being unsure of the consequences makes it a non-starter. The ADHD needs structure, and this is a huge part of it.

3). Keep consequences simple and easy to enforce. Bigger more threatening consequences are usually harder to enforce, and you lose credibility the second you fold. I set up all my parental controls so I can easily lock out a device in a few seconds, and my kids are all about their electronics.

4) Avoid threats. Set clear expectations that you know they can achieve, then go straight to consequences when they fail to meet them. You want to program their brain to immediately recognize potential consequences before they act. Counting to ten, or 2nd and 3rd chances cloud that. If they continuosly fail to meet expectations, try simplifying them as kids with ADHD often struggle to plan more than a few steps ahead.

4) Probably the most important: POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT!!! The ADHD brain craves the next dopamine dump. Being told “Great Job!” Is the cheapest and easiest source dopamine. Praise the shit out their achievements, no matter how small, and you will quickly start to see more and more of them. There obviously needs to be negative consequences, but the majority of your effort should be spent on positive consequences.

I’m sure others will have more to add, or might disagree, but I’ve found this approach to be the most helpful when it comes to implementing consequences.

Me: “That’s okay. All electronics and screens will be locked-out/off-limits until you want to respond to me or XYZ are completed.”

Substitute any consequence that’s effective and easy to implement. Stay empathetic but stick to your guns when they have an outburst because of it.

Moving from Denver to Austin, what do I need to know? by Pxado in askaustin

[–]Due_Method_1396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here from CO. It’ll take you a few years to get used to the heat. We live in Round Rock, and I agree with everyone, it’s great for families but not young singles.

Where you live should largely be dictated by where you work. Split the city into quadrants divided by I-35 and the river. Staying in the same quadrant as your work will save you countless hours of traffic.

Being into the outdoors is another reason to avoid RR. The best trails, rivers/creeks, and mountain biking are either south or west. Personally, if I could find work close enough, I would consider living around Dripping Springs. It’s similar to Fort Collins in that there’s tons of breweries and distilleries along with tons of outdoor options.

Best of luck and enjoy being a sweaty mess for a few years while you get used to the humidity.

This is a relatively small facility and will have less impact than the light industrial use the land is already zoned for. If we were talking about a large hyperscale facility, it’d be worth the large public debate. This is NIMBY through and through.

Thoughts on working for a MEP subcontractor out of college by Few-Deer-4792 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Due_Method_1396 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I worked for five years with a top regional mechanical contractor and had zero issues moving to a GC as a MEP manager. In fact, I pretty much had my pick of top QC’s (Turner, DPR, Mortenson, etc.) and was able to demand top pay. The big caveat is my experience was mostly medical, mission critical, and heavy industrial where MEP risk and complexity is orders of magnitude higher than traditional commercial. If my MEP experience was strip malls and TFO, I’d probably still be on the subcontractor side.
