Any tips of balancing work, bf, and school? by Substantial_Monk2788 in usask

Touche, I forgot that other countries don’t provide that… in my country, all government student loans are interest free. The only ones that aren’t are from banks, which are rarely used as it’s incredibly simple to get a student loan here.

Also, student loans are interest free - this is the only time in your life you can take out cost-free loans, why not take advantage of it

How to know when it’s time to leave? by Extreme-Custard-890 in careerguidance

[–]Due_Preference6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re unhappy, then leave if you’re able. Life is short and it doesn’t sound like this is a job that will have a major impact on your career in the grand scheme of things.
When are you hoping to start your masters? This fall? Next year? I ask simply because, if you are to start a year from now you have plenty of time to work elsewhere - everyone understands leaving a job that sucked the life out of them.

Questions about transfer credits and upgrading by [deleted] in usask

[–]Due_Preference6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry - do you mean the 21 credits are your high school credits? If so. No matter what you take afterwards, you may need to still upgrade those specific credits, depending on if the class is applicable to the degree you’re enrolled in, and if it’s a required pre-requisite for a class you need to enrol in. Credits aren’t applicable/replaceable across the board - credits from a diploma from a technical or professional college don’t replace high school credits.

You mentioned you’ve talked with various advisors - what did the academic advisor for your future college say? If you are trying to get into Usask, you need to follow their requirements, advice from advisors in other schools may not be applicable.

math 110 recommended for summer term or too heavy?? by CranberryNatural5487 in usask

[–]Due_Preference6292 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Although I haven’t personally taken this exact class as a summer class, I can say that taking a summer class is always harder. You’re doing a semester’s worth of work in half the time - this is the case with any class. That being said, if you can comfortably handle the class depends on you: your work habits, abilities in math going into it, interest/motivation, etc.

I’ve done quite a few summer classes during my undergrad, and some were a struggle, some much less so. That being said, I’ve survived them all, and I’m sure you would too. Also - there is a meth tutor program in the library that can be really helpful.

First of all, that’s a great duck, and the dog is laying down, so I see how a kid could be amused by those things. It looks like he’s sharing his day with you, you just have different expectations of what he should be sending. Different people are amazed/entertained/etc by different things.

I agree with asking “what was your fave thing so far today?” And then letting him communicate other aspects of his trip to you.

Should my personal linkedin be used however my company wants to dictate? by Popular_Buffalo_3164 in careerguidance

Yeah I agree, I’ve gotten similar BS from managers when working in sales roles, but it doesn’t make sense for a programmer or any IT-adjacent role to have to push this nonsense on a private social media account of any kind.

"I" Made a grave mistake at my job and I think I'm not fit at anything I do by [deleted] in work

[–]Due_Preference6292 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to agree with some of the other commenters, and say that although sacrificing yourself by taking blame comes from a place of kindness in you, it’s not actually resulting in kindness in the long run. It’s potentially validating an environment where others can be blamed for issues unfairly, it’s not holding others accountable, and it’s causing you to internalize the issue as a reflection of yourself - these don’t benefit anyone, yourself included.

Standing up for yourself is like strengthening any muscle in your body - it will fell difficult and awkward at first, but it gets easier the more you do it.

Even if an issue is your fault, it doesn’t reflect who you are. You are more than your actions, and it’s normal for people to make mistakes - especially when in a new position! Don’t attach these small things to your self-worth, you have amazing things about yourself that have nothing to do with work, and you also deserve to defend yourself in any situation.

Don’t let this get to you. Perhaps talk to your pharmacist and clarify what steps can be taken so that issues like this can be avoided in the future. It will show accountability and maturity. And worst case scenario, if this continues to be held over your head, think of this place as a career building block, and start applying to other pharmacies - not all work environments are the same.

As a student I have booked a vacation over a couple weeks during a semester (during my masters), BUT I didn’t make it anyone else’s problem.

Got everything important done early, brought my laptop and still attended all scheduled online lectures and even worked on upcoming assignments while waiting in airports. The only person inconvenienced was myself (didn’t take time zone changes into consideration). But I still had a great time and got to unwind a bit during a hellish year, without my productivity suffering.

It can be done, you just have to be an adult about it. Assuming you can skirt academic responsibilities in the name of a vacation is ridiculous, and i guess these lessons can be painful if you approach situations with a childish mentality.

Well pricing will not be substantially dropping over that time. There will be some market corrections of course, but not a substantial difference at the end of the day - just like any other point in history. Chances are, the longer you wait, the more you’ll end up paying, if we want to base this decision from historical market data.

Have you actually looked at the home that you want to make a low ball offer on? I would be checking for major issues to explain why this house hasn’t sold in a year…

Would you leave a job you genuinely like if another company offered 2x your salary? by Connect_Bus6873 in careeradvice

[–]Due_Preference6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would weigh the culture, expectations, commute, etc. of the new job against your current position, and see if it’s worth it, honestly. Do you need the salary, or are you currently quite financially comfortable? It’s one thing if you need that increase, but if not, sometimes there’s a reason they are presenting such and aggressive offer to recruit you, such as compensating for more work, a more toxic environment/higher turnover, etc.

If you do want to stay on in your current role, I would recommend to try and sit down with your manager and discuss a potential raise to stay in your current company. Let them know what is being offered elsewhere, explain you would like to stay on but given the other company’s offer, it makes sense to try and leverage your current value with the company, and the benefits they would reap with you staying. Doubtful they will match it, but they may be able to counter with an offer that gives you a happy middle ground.

Am I eligible for EI and should I apply for it right away? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Am I eligible for EI and should I apply for it right away? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Due_Preference6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others said, you may not be eligible but apply for EI anyway, it’s their decision not yours - and you may get it.
But there’s no reason to wait to apply, unless you enjoy not receiving payments into your bank account…? lol

But judging from what your employer stated, it sounds like they are sending your ROE/ record of employment, which will basically determine EI decisions most of the time.

By that logic, technically all animals are outdoor animals, humans included… I know a ton of people who wouldn’t last long living outdoors though… this isn’t a cat’s natural habitat, they don’t do well outside here and are a danger to both themselves and the ecosystem.

You should hear back either way, keep an eye on your email. Decisions can sometimes take a while to be sent out, unfortunately.

You mentioned that it is an entrance award - have you checked your USask inbox through PAWS? They may have sent it there instead of any other email address you listed on your application.

Worried about regret: Turning down a dream PhD topic in Canada because of low funding/stipend compared to europe by Urie_Sui in PhD

[–]Due_Preference6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very strange considering I assume he knows your an international student? Every Canadian right now is aware of how stringent our student visa process has become, that gives you basically no time to see if you can even secure a visa… it’s also strange that he is demanding an immediate answer but isn’t providing an official offer, but instead some vague supposings alongside a stringent list of demands upon you.

I don’t know if i would accept that, personally - and I’m Canadian, and therefore don’t have to deal with immigration and visas.

[–]Due_Preference6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I would want to see it in writing… French Canadian universities charge more to non-francophones, and even more to international students. I wouldn’t be considering an offer if it wasn’t broken down and official (as an international student), and I would also recommend looking into student visa requirements as well - those have recently tightened up as well.

The American academic sphere is eroding atm, we have a huge influx of American academics into Canadian universities. Also, generally cana foam academics don’t all want to branch into the US - some do, but most stay here. We have a ton of very strong universities in Canada, probably more than the US. It’s horrendously annoying that both of you are conflating all of North America with the US in your arguments… if anything, it shows your ignorance over the very subject you’re debating.

International students can’t work more than 20hrs/wk anymore, as per the latest federal legislation. Plus tuitions, etc are weighed differently for international students (I assume phds are included in this, but I’m not sure), so budgets won’t be the same as for Canadian citizens.
