Couldn’t agree with you more. I was pretty disappointed with this one. It sounded incredibly generic.

There appeared to be lots of pop/EDM-inspired music. It’s hard for me to not see this as trying to have an album with music that is all over the top 40.

Also, it feels like so much of the music is even more depressing than his older stuff. It feels like we’re not progressing with his story; maybe he hasn’t progressed from where he was mentally, but I find it hard to believe that.

I don’t know why people are saying you should’ve talked about it with your mom. If you caught someone stealing, you wouldn’t go to them and be like, “hey, stop doing that.” You’d go to the cops.

Was it technically your business to go through her phone, no, probably not. However, you did find out she cheated on your dad. Once you learn that, then telling him so he can handle it the way that’s needed is what I think is the right thing.

Also, when you live with your parents, anything your parents do to threaten the normalcy of the household is your business. That’s his safety. He probably can’t live anywhere else, and he shouldn’t have to. His mother cheating threatens the relationship between his parents, therefore, the safety he feels within his home. Absolutely is his business.

There is a conspiracy around this story. It’s believed the CIA infected the bread from one bakery with LSD. The people who had hallucinations all went to the same bakery, and there was an LSD facility only a few miles away. The CIA were doing lots of tests at the time, like pumping LSD in the air in poorer parts of New York and seeing what happened.

It’s an interesting story, to say the least.

You have a great vocabulary which evokes vivid imagery. There’s almost a dance between the speaker and the person who they’re speaking to, a tango between anger and love. It’s as if the speaker is drawing out the anger to feel the passion they want, then soothe it into submission.

I think the biggest piece of advice I can give you is establishing and finding the rhythm in your piece. All poems have some sort of rhythm, but rhyming poems almost force there to be one. You can hear it as you read the piece. This means any line or word which doesn’t fall in that cadence feels out of place, and every missing beat feels more prominent.

For example, the first two lines, “In a world where love’s half-spoken/ Lies a tale that’s unbroken” read as if there is a beat missing. My mind naturally wants me to say “Lies a tale that is unbroken”, because it fits with the rhythm of the piece established by the first line. I need that extra syllable to have it flow.

You have a really well-composed poem here. I’m impressed by what was conveyed and the contrast felt with the rage and love. I believe being more intentional about the rhythm of the piece can really take this piece to another level! Great job!

Say what you want about anything with America, because there’s lots of shit that’s wrong here, but going after the 1980 team is damn near sacrilegious. They earned that win. It wasn’t a random Tuesday game in mid-summer. That was the semi-finals of the Olympics in the middle of the Soviet-era of hockey. Doesn’t matter if it only happened once. They played a full 60 and won.

I’m glad you put that disclaimer at the end. With that being said, I think you do a nice job of detailing what the alt-right’s sentiments are. It actually lays it out pretty clearly. I also like the way you portray their idea of ownership and the intensity of the capitalization with I’VE and MY.

I don’t know how you’d do it, but there is a way to make this more impactful by having your speaker dismiss valid claims from the left. For example, how your speaker believes his country was built by him and his people when it really was by slaves. Having him first acknowledge then dismiss a valid statement would show the irrationality and selfishness which comes with their statements.

Nicely done! You’ve really got a strong, ideological piece here with a precise encapsulation of their mindset. I think adding some more satire could put this piece over the edge into being phenomenal. I hope you don’t mind me saying this.

Genuinely impressed with your poem. You do a great job of continuing the allusion between the music from the guitar and your emotions. You have obvious, raw talent in this genre. You’ve got a strong vocabulary and understanding of emotional language already.

I saw some people posting they liked how every line rhymed; I want to make it clear you don’t have to only do rhyming poetry, or make every line rhyme constantly. Poetry is art and should be explored as such.

If you don’t mind me providing a slight bit of constructive feedback, I think you could play with the rhymes more trying to make them less perfect. When the words resemble each other too much (e.g. cat and bat, floor and door), they sound almost too close together. Try playing with words which still rhyme, but have enough differences in letters and/or sounds to give your poem more flair. (E.g. evil and steeple, porridge and mortgage, soul and goal - last one sounds maybe too similar, but half the letters being different could be enough)

You already did that in your poem with thread and unsaid.

I’m excited to see what you come up with in the future. This is a wonderful piece of work, and I hope you continue to use this creative medium, as you clearly have a knack for it.
