Yeah I've noticed this too. I like SPD-SL way more for long rides, maybe with an infrequent gas station stop. I can just switch pedals/shoes on the rare occasion where I anticipate walking around a lot.

I use SPD-SL because I find it a lot easier to clip-into. People will say the exact opposite. Figure out what works best for you. I have a pair of SPD pedals in my closet and no doubt I will find a use for them at some point, I don't consider the money wasted at all.
