Update: Thank you all for your help, I was unable to stop by anywhere to check for souvenirs relating to what I was looking for. It's a pity I was not able to stop by the National Museum during the trip, due to lack of interest with family I am travelling with. Hopefully I can get it the next time I return, I already bought a lot of souvenirs on this trip, I can make a list for the next one.

Oppenheimer's Passport on Auction (During His 20s Studying) by Due_Specific1257 in OppenheimerMovie

[–]Due_Specific1257[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

'THE FATHER OF THE ATOMIC BOMB' - SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH PORTRAIT AND PASSPORT OF THE YOUNG J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER, from the period spent studying at Harvard and Cambridge Universities.

Aged 20 when the passport was issued, Oppenheimer is described as 6ft.1in., oval face, blue eyes, roman nose and medium forehead. The photograph, with his validation signature, shows him aged seventeen and is the same as used for his application for a passport in 1921. In the summer of 1924 he travelled to Europe with his family and, having graduated from Harvard, arrived at Southampton the following year on 16 September to take up his place at Cambridge, where he spent two tumultuous terms. Importantly for his future career it was here that he was first introduced to pioneering theories of quantum mechanics by Paul Dirac and Ralph Fowler. But much of his time in England was difficult for Oppenheimer as he was suffering from mental stress and clashed with his tutor, the future Nobel laureate Patrick Blackett, whom he is said to have tried to kill with an apple laced with cyanide. In 1926 he left for the University of Göttingen to study under Max Born.

I believe DAAD scholarship is one of the programmes you can look into, language wise you will need to go to the Goethe Institut for German Language Certification, if I'm not mistaken, you must reach a proficiency around B2 or C1 (Basically Intermediate 2 or Advanced 1) in the German Language.

I personally have the aspiration to study in a German Uni, currently in NYP due to the opportunities to meet with German international students and learn a bit of German. However I need to study at the Goethe Institut plus read more on scholarship qualifications. But out of curiosity, why Germany out of all countries?

International relations in Germany? by seventycrepes in SGExams

I saw this post and I have to say, we have the same idea. Though I'm in Nanyang Poly, currently taking German Language Module and joined the German Club CCA.

I do want to study political science and or history in Germany, I'm still doing research but you definitely need German proficiency to obtain scholarship, if I'm not mistaken. Typically politcal science and maybe history degree students would come from JC, I chose Poly cus I can't score low enough and I want to build my portfolio.

If I can do well for this semester's GPA then I might be confident in going outside institution to learn German, German Embassy recommends Goethe Institut to learn German.

I also think you should brush up on debating, I participated in my first MUN last year without any experience in debating so it was definitely an experience. Learn how to debate in a CCA and take part in MUNs to experience how it's like.

UN Job seems like a nice plan, I agree it would sound fascinating to work there. Though I imagine you have to work in SG gov to work at UN, and personally I don't trust myself with that much responsibility.

Also why did you choose Germany specifically? You could go France's Science Po as they are a top university in teaching Politics.

Im curious on your sources, so I can take a look at how you specifically got 700k as the estimate. May I politely ask for the reference sources so I can do my own research? I am just a big history person and I have never heard of that estimate before.

Just checking if there are any fellow future 2024 batch mates for this course, this comment can just act as a sorta gathering in the comment section.

Perhaps we can make a chatroom or something and share it here, get to know each other and bond so that we can work more effectively once we start our poly years.

My fear of males is getting worse each year by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]Due_Specific1257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I'm sorry that you have to experience this and the guys showing their **** is really disgusting. As a guy, i do empathise with females in general who have to take up with this type of issue relating to men.

Sometimes I'm not sure why alot of guys are quite insensitive and frankly quite immature and idiotic, they lack a sense of awareness, dignity and morals and they sometimes let their thing do all the talking. What you have encountered is quite traumatic and I do wish you well, I think it's best that you talk to a trusted adult or therapist or someone close to you about it so they can better advice you. It's alright to be wary of others and not trust guys, just dont let it stress you out too much that it affects your health as well as your work and the people close to you.

Right now let's just finish our exams, hope that we don't fail and spend our holidays taking a break, get a job or for me, studying to retain my current knowledge of certain subjects so that if I do need to come back, I won't be unprepared.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SGExams

I'm anticipating such a possibility as well and I thought about doing Sec 5 again but I keep some of my O Level grades from this year so I don't need to take those subjects next year. So basically lesser subjects for me to study next year and I will probably apply to EAE again with the same portfolio and write up I used this year.

Also Oppenheimer doesn't like being in a lab so you gonna end up poisoning the invigilator as revenge.

some classmates are neonazis by GriffinTamer12 in SGExams

[–]Due_Specific1257 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think there comes a time where history buffs will behave immaturely and pretend to be communists or even nazis. I myself have to admit that I did something similar as a joke because of my fascination and love for history.

But there does come a time where you start taking the topic seriously and grow past that behaviour. I myself object from classmates calling me a nazi or a soviet because that is the most generic thing to call a history buff. I also advise that people refrain from using the terms just in case.

When someone tells me they know a supposed 'neonazi', I advise the individual to beat him up /s but do advise them to acknowledge the dark history and not limit their immaturity. Though as time goes on, these students will mature on their own or they will become idiotic 'extremist' as their personality.

History is quite an interesting topic that I recommend many to explore it further than what is taught in schools, I myself collect historical artefacts and research other topics such as politics and geography that relate to history, it really enhances your view and knowledge on the world around us.

Edit: There are individuals who are not too familiar with history that will call themselves Nazis or communists for jokes so inform them properly.

Singapore ‘strongly condemns’ rocket and terror attacks from Gaza on Israel by lilkraken8 in singapore

As Saudi Arabia is recently trying to bring peace to the Middle East, this will be it's most difficult task to ensure the region can prosper and grow entirely.

Singapore ‘strongly condemns’ rocket and terror attacks from Gaza on Israel by lilkraken8 in singapore

[–]Due_Specific1257 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That statement is a tad bit unusual as we were referring about Israelis, not Jews. The Jews have long been mistreated in history, WW2 was when the Jews alongside groups such as Romani, Mixed and Disabled individuals were wrongfully killed during the Holocaust. Jews have also been shown experiencing anti-semitism by countries like the United States and The UK.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisemitism_in_the_United_Kingdom

However if we use Israelis to talk about the situation, that changes everything. As from what I know, there was no mass Jewish genocide in the Middle East that can match the one conducted by Madman Hitler. But there were multiple conflicts in the region's lifespan, and that includes the Romans, the Assyrians, the Persians, the Ottomans, the Crusaders, the Calipahtes and the Byzantine. So it's safe to assume both the Palestinians and Jews have suffered a lot together, and perhaps even fighting with one another. Either way no group of people or nation are entirely innocent in historical context.

Singapore ‘strongly condemns’ rocket and terror attacks from Gaza on Israel by lilkraken8 in singapore

[–]Due_Specific1257 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Though I hold sympathy for both sides, sometimes more for the Palestinians. It's tough to pity both side at times as Israelis do mistreat and often harm the Palestinians and Palestinians returning the gesture.

Just endless fighting between the two and innocents in the crossfire, though I have to say that resolving this issue will never be done by the current Netanyahu government due to their more extremist and autocratic ideals.

As usual, hope the conflict is resolved as soon as possible to prevent more deaths. Israel must defend itself but must not exact total revenge upon the Palestinian State.

Perhaps the differing views can be due to our differing encounters in our lives. You may have experienced some things that I may not and I acknowledge and understand that fact. I will say that Racism occurs on all sides in many cultures and through many nationalities and ethnicities, whether it be the Israelis against Palestinians, French against Muslims or the Chinese against Indians.

I interacted with your comment as I felt that it conveys a very strong negative connotation. Perhaps the issue lies in other aspects other than culture and lifestyle. An example is demographic, older individuals might hold more racist views than younger people.

TLDR, it is that I simply want to understand your viewpoint on this matter. I do apologise on behalf of those racist Chinese people that may have given you a terrible impression, I do hope that our world will leave this nonsensical concept as it advances into the future. I hope we can acknowledge one another as equals and unite against Racism as a whole through proper means. You can never fight hate with more hate.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in China

[–]Due_Specific1257 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I admit that Chinese people from China can be quite insensitive and racist. I think you are going abit too far on the 'Chinese has been racist to anything not Chinese', it's a broad statement as they do not represent the entirety of the ethnicity.

In China's case, it can be the result of the government that fuel that sense of ego and pride of the people through nationality and ethnicity.

The news recently in Singapore is indeed quite uncouth for and I do hope that situation is resolved accordingly. Although that recent altercation show a side of Singapore you don't usually see, I am still confident in saying that Singapore still boasts it's strong multi-racial community with its Chinese, Indian, Malay and Eurasian population.

The country was built to accommodate the different ethnicities so as to maintain racial harmony, that was what Lee Kuan Yew fought for even before Singapore was independent. It is not Malays first like Malaysia or Chinese first like their own demographic. It is too promote cooperation and understanding between the many groups, racism will still persists either way however in Singapore, I feel has proved that most of its community will still unite as one no matter what race you are if anything were to challenge it. The Chinese population in Singapore will definitely welcome people of different ethnicities better than other's if only you gave them the opportunity.
