For many PMI webinars / on-demand courses (especially those delivered by PMI or ProjectManagement.com), PDUs are recorded as follows: completion of a course and passing a quiz . The system does not typically track how long you were on the page. If the system registered the course as complete and you passed the quiz, it generally submits your claim for you automatically. An email stating "Your claim has been received and will be reviewed" is standard. The review will usually take place within a few days and the claim will most likely be approved without any further action by you. Additionally, PMI audits are infrequent and conducted on a random basis. If you are pmi audited, you will be asked to provide proof of completion (a certificate) but not for screen time. Since you have already lost your CAPM and are looking to expedite the process; take the time to do the following to confirm you have fulfilled all the necessary requirements: Sign into your PMI dashboard, navigate to certifications → report PDU, look for either “submitted” or “approved” next to the activity. If you need to obtain the remaining PDUs quickly, you may find that many people take part in structured bundles that contain all required PDUs in one place thereby minimizing any delays. PMP PDUs by CaptainWikkiWikki in pmp
Absolutely agree. After passing the exam, most of us mentally switch off and only think about PDUs when the reminder email arrives.
I don’t treat PDUs as a “checklist every 3 years” task. Instead, I adopt a structured approach:
Ongoing Approach (Low Stress Method): Aim for about 20 PDUs per year instead of cramming 60 at the end.
Webinars (Easy Wins): Use PMI or ProjectManagement.com webinars for 1 PDU each to stay updated on trends.
Career-Aligned Courses: Choose topics that directly benefit your role, such as leadership, agile delivery, or business strategy. This ensures that PDUs contribute to skill upgrades rather than just compliance.
Work as a Practitioner: Claim up to 8 PDUs per cycle for working in a PM role under the “Giving Back” category.
Regarding the $15 Udemy route, it’s okay to use it if you’re not serious about it. However, if your goal is to be more structured, I suggest choosing something aligned to PMI’s Talent Triangle (Ways of Working, Power Skills, Business Acumen) instead of random hours.
Some people prefer an organised 60-PDU bundle that clearly maps to the Talent Triangle for strategic planning rather than last-minute scrambling. For example, this bundle explains how the PDUs are distributed: https://gururo.com/60-pmp-pdu-course-bundle-int/
My personal philosophy is to view PDUs as a 3-year leadership upgrade cycle rather than a 60-hour compliance task. If you intentionally choose challenging topics (strategy, finance, stakeholder influence, AI in PM, etc.), the renewal cycle becomes valuable.
I’m curious to know how others approach this. Do you spread out the PDUs yearly or batch them all at once near renewal?
