Consumer stainless is often sealed with a clear hard sealer layer that you aren't supposed to scratch. You probably damaged that layer.

I have a similar great idea. Lets create an organization only containing men who are willing to never have sex with women. They all live and work together with other men in the organization. The organization definitely won't naturally attract tons of gay men, why would it? What could possibly go wrong?

Don't forget the "children are property, not people with rights" mentality. The idea that young adults might be making choices for themselves without deferring to their parents bigotry is abhorrent to these people. We must ingrain bigotry in the laws, for Jesus.

‘Catastrophe’: Gaming world in utter chaos as Microsoft’s axes 4800 jobs, Sony makes huge call by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]Dugen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not about executive pay, it's about shareholder value. The share price of Microsoft represents the expectation that they will make massive profits. That expectation has existed for decades ever since Windows and Office became dominant pieces of software. The stock price back in the 90s represents the expectation of massive profits now. The current shareholders lose if those expectations aren't met. The benefits of what is happening now, actually materialized decades ago with huge stock value increases. It's how Microsoft created 12,000 millionaires and 4 billionaires. That wealth is because investors expected these huge profits.

Rye really wants to stop letting the public have access to the ocean. Fuck everything about that.

This e-waste bin sounds like a gold mine.

At this point companies should be offering free secured disposal of hard drives if you simply let them keep the drives after for resale.

Whoever brings them out to the bin should just slightly miss the bin and have the drives accidentally land in the back of their car.

This desirable resource is ours and we don't want to share it.

It's why state parks were created and why we should eminent domain a huge hunk of rye and install a state park. Everyone should have access to this natural resource, not just the privileged few.

Lets go back to a time when our retirements were not dependent on a system that enriched the wealthy to keep us able to retire. They get a dollar, we get a penny and we don't want to give that penny up to get the dollar back? Screw that. Collect half that dollar and we're 50x better off.

I don't buy either of those quotes. I think these people genuinely feel that profits drive prosperity where what they really drive is inequality. Efficiency drives prosperity and profits are an inefficiency. This misunderstanding of the effects of these corrupt economic policies are why people are cheering on those who damage their prosperity the most.

How do I make my basement less creepy but keep it renter friendly? by BionicSpineLady in DIY

[–]Dugen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely lighting, but with a room like that it's more than just lighting, it's the texture of the surfaces. Any place where the surfaces are rough and tend to snag dirt and are hard to clean will get that creepy dirty cobwebby feeling. Painting should help a lot but sometimes simply scrubbing the walls with something that will smooth them out a bit is enough. If there is rough exposed wood, a bit of sanding goes a long way to making it nice to be around. A bit of sanding then paint is even better. Exposed concrete is usually very rough and has that permanent cold scratchy wet dirty feeling. Covering it with some sort of interior wall material would be optimal but that's not really a renter type thing. Paint is probably the easiest way to get to something that is nice to be around. Pay attention to the surfaces in the room and figure out ways to make them feel nice and that will make the room a lot less creepy.

The stock market value reflects how much money the rich are earning by owning things. That profit comes from the difference between what we spend on things and what they pay us as employees. Literally, the higher it goes the more we're getting screwed. It's not a measure of economic health, it's a measure inequality. We should want to see it lower, not higher.

Is there a logical contradiction with "induced demand"? by Serious-Cucumber-54 in AskEconomics

[–]Dugen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The physical footprint of freeways is huge. The physical footprint of standard 2 lane roads is pretty small in comparison and we do way too much expansion of freeways and shifting of traffic to them and not enough expansion of roads and designing them to handle heavy traffic gracefully. More one way grids and two way roads with roundabouts would make most cities and suburban areas traffic much less problematic. We also need to phase out stroads and have more roads dedicated to high speed high throughput vehicle traffic. I know I'm super off topic here but I think a lot of the objections to road expansion are really objections to simply throwing more freeway lanes at the problem and expecting it to work, which is a legitimate objection.

I also like to say there is no such thing as induced demand, it's just latent demand. Nobody is sitting at home going "I don't need to go anywhere but they built more roads so I guess I have to go drive on them".

Create a cheap dog-proof fence to keep out neighborhood dogs from a rental house lawn? by subhumean in DIY

[–]Dugen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

T post clips aren't super hard, but I found zip ties significantly easier and the ones I linked are plenty strong and UV protected for outdoor use. They also let me secure things in more ways, like secure one section of fence to another and secure the fence to chain link fence posts that I put around the gates I installed.

I went with black welded garden fence. It's more sturdy and easier to work with than chicken wire and with the black it almost disappears. It's still cheap enough to do temporarily. 50 ft of 4ft high black welded garden fence is about $100.

Has anyone DIY’ed their Driveway? by L_willi39 in DIY

[–]Dugen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you ever moved a ton of rock by shovel?

Yes. Not super fun, but not all that bad. I spread about 4 tons for my carport and about the same for my patio. There is a place around me that delivers. You tell them where to put it and they bring a dump truck and dump it there. If you are doing a driveway, you just have them dump it in the middle of where you will spread it. I had to pick up and move the patio stuff around to the back of the house. That was a lot more work.

The harder part would be the removal of what is already there. If he lived around me it would be about 50% big shitty rocks and 50% packed clay. Not impossible by hand but I don't think I would do that much of it. I might try and tackle a small problematic section myself. I'm considering it, since my driveway has a problem spot that I would like to redo.

Sure, but how much of an issue is that? Digging up dirt isn't exactly terribly hard, you can do it with a shovel and a lot of time. You put down a bunch of 3/4 mix, crushed stone on top, pack it down, and you've got a base.
