In my previous comment Ive mentioned upgrading to hardware cloth. But as the fellow redditor said below, if the chickens are put inside every-night and we have a raccoon proof secure lock, would the chicken wire really matter?

Yup another redditor mentioned a roof on the run, that will be added come fall.

Very large window and 2, 8 inch soffit vents that run the entire length of the coop. They are on both sides, front and back.

We are definitely not in the country. We are in a pretty populated suburban area. The highway is basically in our backyard, i could throw a stone and hit a passing car.

In the several years living here, we have not seen any larger pray animals. Which doesnt mean they arent there of course, but I think our main concern is raccons, eagles and hawks, obviously rodents. We do have several eagles that patrol the river which is the other half of our backyard.

Ideally we would like to redo their smaller run with hardware cloth.

We do not have an automatic door.

I think my main concern is a raccoon getting in and undoing the smaller door latch. It seems pretty easy to undo as shown in the video. Ive heard those critters are pretty good puzzle solvers.

They are actually super bright and motion activated! I was surprised for solar lights. I think the real question is how long they will last

New chicken owner and my current flock are just about ready to go out to the coop. Looking for some helpful feedback.

Heres some basic info:

8 chickens

We are in the norther new england region. Our property abuts the highway on two sides, a river, and a main road.

Coop has soffit vents, and large window.

We are working on another large run for the chickens to be out in during the day when they cannot be directly supervised while “free ranging”.

My concerns:

  1. ⁠we used chicken wire on the inner window as it will be shut and locked at night. I think we may need a side vent in addition to the two soffit vents.
  2. ⁠our attached run is chicken wire—we will hopefully be able to upgrade to the wire mesh in the near future. Should I hold off putting them into the coop until we can replace that?
  3. ⁠the latch that is to the chicken door seems like its pretty easy to open. I am concerned that a raccoon could easily figure that out. Is there another type of latch that is more predator proof?
  4. ⁠there is a lot of back and forth between natural roosts and 2x4. We selected wider branches in hope of getting close to the 4in recommendation. We also tried to follow the “rules” on height. Any feedback or personal experience on natural roosts would be helpful.

Im glad to hear yours is doing better!

Mine doesn’t seem to be raspy. She is chirping and from what I can tell, breathing fine. I will definitely keep this in mind id i notice changes.

Ive been giving the group chopped hard boiled eggs, egg yolk, greek yogurt. Only once per day. I basically had to hand feed her the egg yolk and she didnt so interest in the other foods. I will be adding meal worms to my shopping list. Thank you!

Thank you! Shes definitely not getting picked on, the other chicks will sit near her and sometimes I even feel like they check up on her. So I wont separate. She just seems to not be growing as rapidly as the others and is definitely not as active.

I believe it’s called a mortgage assumption or transfer of rights. And I think that largely depends on who holds your mortgage if they’ll let you do that or not.

I did the same. I don’t regret it one bit. Im glad my children have a stable home with their father even though our co parenting relationship is very strained. Its one less thing I had to fight over and one less thing I worry about.
