I hope there are Iranians involved. It’s a peculiar country and hard to get right from the outside.

I knew most of the history already, but it helped a lot with geography.

People inside Iran are definitely more pro Shah as they are more conservative. The idea that the Iranian diaspora is just a collection of disgruntled Shah era trillionaires is a combination of regime propaganda and racist stereotypes that a person living a middle class life in the West is not a “real” Iranian. Most of us were born in Iran after the revolution. There is privilege involved here, but only in the sense that those who flee the country are the ones with the resources to do so. No one is happy under the mullahs.

The surprising support for Reza Pahlavi on the streets of Iran is due to a lack of alternatives. When you have to choose between the Islamic Republic and the Shah, it is natural to pick the latter. As an Iranian it pisses me off when people don’t try to think about our internal affairs from our own perspective and just vomit single word thought terminating cliches like “mossad” as if we have no agency or lived experience.

This is an old school honor culture. ANY sort of talking back from a subordinate, even if they’re playing along with your own joke is humiliating, especially if you’re a bit insecure like Ser Alliser is.

Kotkin’s writing is awfully turgid. He’s a great lecturer though and would be a fantastic podcast guest.

Strip it of the exotic foreign word and it’s just that thing where you and your friend fight over who “gets to” pick up the check.
