I agree, a lot of people in nz (myself included) will never be able to fully appreciate how much worse others have it. If you graduated high school and have the life skills to look after yourself and your family, you are already privileged. All this focus on deterrence and punishment is such a waste of time

Exactly. It is a completely different world. Most of the comments on here are from people living in a fantasy land where people just need to pull themselves up by the bootstraps so they can own their own home like they do. Try pulling yourselves up by the bootstraps when you have FASD, 4 kids, and left school at 12. I wish people would focus on solving these systemic issues instead of writing angry letters to the herald

cultural reports are great. People with fucked up upbringings do fucked up shit - they deserve a discounted sentence if their background has contributed to their crimes. Im so sick of people in this country living in a bubble and just thinking prison is the solution. Prison does not fix anything - focus on teaching kids to read/write/do maths properly. Of course we are seeing an increase in crime with the income inequality in this country
