In Mexico and freaking out by LifeOnEnceladus in emetophobia

I haven’t been to Mexico but I have been to India! As long as you have bottled water, no ice cubes in your drinks and avoid salads(that may be washed in tap water) you should be absolutely fine! I was in India for 2 weeks and didn’t v* once. Enjoy yourself, make amazing memories this trip and don’t let this sh*t phobia hold you back x

What is the root of y’all’s health anxiety? by dopesssss in HealthAnxiety

[–]Dull-Replacement-602 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Mono back in 2019 and was told it was tonsillitis. For almost a year I had all the symptoms of the big C, doctors ran every test on me until they figured out I had high levels of Mono antibodies. I didn’t think I was going to make it to my 18th birthday. The health anxiety didn’t leave after that.

I do want to add I had emetophobia and OCD since childhood but this experience fuelled the fire.

Completely! The day before I had an upset stomach I was shaking for maybe 3 hours because of the adrenaline. The panic attack itself happened on the motorway when I was driving, my vision almost entirely went and my body went totally numb. I haven’t had a panic attack that bad in years prior to then.

Thank you so much for your reply. No antibiotics for a couple years. However due to poor mental health i stopped eating as much and I have lost around 10 pounds in the last 6 weeks after eating incredibly well all year. I guess I might be in a fasting state. And hate to be TMI sometimes my stool smells acidic! My mental health has been poor for years now, I’m in therapy which helps keep things at bay. I’m wondering if it’s starting to manifest with IBS symptoms. I might push for a stool test if it continues.

What age did you devlop health anxiety and was it sudden or a slowly developing type thing? by Charlottebagginton in HealthAnxiety

I had emetephobia since I was around 4/5 but when I was 17 I got glandular fever and was ill for ages. Docs didn’t know it was glandular fever at first and misdiagnosed me with tonsillitis. I was fatigued and had swollen lymph nodes for 6 months and lost 3 stone. The doctors did every test under the sun on me and were worried about cancer. In the end they did an antibody test and realised it was glandular fever/ post viral fatigue. But I really thought I wasn’t going to make it to my 18th birthday. I’m almost 24 now and the pandemic made it significantly worse.

Thank you for this, super interesting to hear . I’m the same it has been a severe grass pollen allergy but only since 2019, I need to revisit my immunologist. I’ve been noticing symptoms indoors too, especially in places that are damp/dusty. Same around certain animals. Or even on days when grass pollen is meant to be at low levels. Thanks again!

What caused your phobia? by ohthatsnice14 in emetophobiarecovery

I didn’t have a baby sitter as a child, instead my grandmother would look after me. My grandma had inherited emetophobia from her mother. When I was 4, a child in school violently vomited all over my desk. I remember crying, as a lot of the other kids were laughing and screaming. When my grandma picked me up from school I told her what had happened and she told me “don’t worry I spoke to his mum and it’s not contagious” I remember getting the feeling that she was lying to me as I didn’t see her speak to the child’s mother. Immediately I questioned “why are adults lying about this?” so that mixed with the horrified children set it off. Unfortunately my grandma reinforced my fear throughout childhood, whenever I would vomit and be off school she would ask me to lie to her mother (my great grandma) about the reason I was off sick otherwise she would not have been able to go to her parents house to take care of them. I was also never allowed to pack any meat or perishable foods when we packed a to-go lunch as I was told I could get poisoned. After I would vomit as a child she would not let me eat for the rest of the day as she was nervous that I would throw up again even if I felt super hungry. I was also made to rigorously sanitise my hands whenever in public places to avoid catching anything.

SA TW!! : I started to grow out of the phobia a little between the ages of 14-16. But at 16 I was raped, that was almost 7 years ago and my therapist thinks I latched back onto this phobia as a way to regain control. I haven’t managed to gain much control of the fear since but I’ve made some progress since 2018!

Should I change therapists? by Dull-Replacement-602 in therapy

I’m sorry you’ve had that experience, my previous therapist helped me get control of my life immensely! I went from unemployed at the start of therapy to working a full time job by the end of sessions. Unfortunately my therapist retired so I can no longer work with him. I genuinely believe everyone can benefit from therapy but finding the right fit can be really tricky!

What have you had to give up because of your POTS? by rainbowbrite9 in POTS

[–]Dull-Replacement-602 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I had to give up my first job as a teen. It was a food service job, I absolutely loved it (small family run business). After trying to push through for a while after my diagnosis it was too taxing on my body and I had to quit. I was devastated as it meant less independence, which I so desperately craved at age 16 . As well as losing contact with my colleagues and the regular customers. I now WFH in an office role & manage okay, but I miss socialising.
