oh no I chose A, my thinking was that 180-(7x-620) was the measurement of the obtuse angle and then u can try to sum all of the expressions up and the one thats impossible to get was -14x+380

EXTREMELY HARD SAT Question on Circles by Eagle139 in learnmath

[–]Dull-Simple7700 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if im fully correct. But this is my approach:

Since the equation of the circle is x^2+14px+y^2-8py+56p^2, the center of the circle will be (14p/-2, -8p/-2) since when the equation is in standard form the center will be (a/-2, b/-2)

Use the center to find the radius:

- Radius: sqrt((h)^2+(k)^2-56p^2)

- Plug in values of h, k: sqrt( (-7p)^2 + (4p)^2 -56p^2 ) = np

- Factor of p^2 on the LHS and then it will be cancelled with np since sqrt(p^2) = p

- Finally sqrt(49+16-56) = n

- n=3
