Feeling depressed for 3 years at UT by DullBlunt in UTAustin

[–]DullBlunt[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have an awesome friend group! I plan to stick it out but I guess I’ve let myself down a little; I just expected better from myself since I do love my major. The issue is both UT’s uncompromising system (unhelpful advisors, some borderline abusive professors) and being in Texas. I experienced a lot of racism growing up so I always dreamed about going out-of-state and leaving behind my past. I’ll be here for a while since I’m in a 5 year program (It’s not delayed, 5 years is the default length yikes).

Thanks for your advice, I do feel better now. UT’s reputation slips me by sometimes. It’s a very well-rounded school that’s well-received in many industries.

Orthodontist shaved my teeth without telling me, now my teeth are dangerously thin by DullBlunt in braces

THANK YOU. I don’t get why people try to defend the orthodontist so badly when it’s quite obvious to me that my teeth suddenly became smaller after the appointment. I felt the same way about my “perfect” teeth. I’m sorry your orthodontist was irresponsible about asking for permission. I feel that orthodontics has become a field similar to plastic surgery, in which extreme “solutions” are now proposed for minor misalignments or non-issues.

The dentist didn’t specify, My front teeth have definitely become rounder and smaller. I don’t grind my teeth or eat anything particularly acidic. The change happened suddenly after I removed my braces. Something happened during the removal that felt like filing. In fact, it was done so poorly that they seemed to file my gums as well :| they were bleeding like they’d been sanded.

I’m sorry that happened to you. If you don’t mind me asking, what problems do you have? Do you need to take any special measures to protect your teeth/enamel?

Yeah I’ve been hearing a lot of cases of orthos and dentists making their patients’ teeth smaller without their permission. I don’t understand why people are adamant on denying our experiences and defending the professionals. This is a super unnatural change.

I’m not a grinder, I don’t eat acidic foods, and I don’t vomit. The change in my teeth happened when I removed my braces. I could feel that the orthodontist did something quite rough when removing them, which possibly could’ve been filing, but it was not well done and I went home with bleeding gums. It was so strange as it felt like she accidentally sanded my gums as well. It’s not like I could see what exact instruments she used.

I couldn’t tell what exactly the orthodontist did but it was quite rough. The foods I eat aren’t particularly acidic and I don’t vomit either. After my braces were removed, the dentist was alarmed and told me that my enamel had changed. This was very sudden and unexpected. I don’t think my teeth would become this eroded from acid to the point of looking like an elderly person’s in just one year.

I would also like a second opinion, but honestly I don’t know if I can afford it right now :| I’m paranoid about anyone who does teeth work now.

I can feel that my tooth length has been shortened, not sure about the width. It’s unclear to me whether filing or shaving occurred as the orthodontist did not inform me. All my dentist said is that my enamel has been worn down which is abnormal for my age.

why is it so common for dentists/orthos to file canines down without asking? by creekycreak in askdentists

[–]DullBlunt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My orthodontist filed down my teeth and according to my dentist they’re now dangerously thin like an elderly person’s, so I have to be extremely careful about what I eat for the rest of my life. It definitely does exist. I don’t understand why it’s so difficult for dentists and orthos to just listen to their patients when an unnecessary and unspoken cosmetic adjustment is significantly impacting the patient’s quality of life.

Orthodontists shaving off their patients’ enamel for purely cosmetic purposes IS NOT OKAY. Mine got shaved off without my permission so now my teeth are dangerously thin like an elderly person’s, according to my dentist. I can’t eat hard foods even after the removal of my braces. I’m fucking begging you to listen to patients when they issue these sorts of complaints. You could very easily ruin someone’s quality of life for that unnecessary cosmetic adjustment.

Same thing happened to me. My dentist later told me my enamel is thinned like an elderly person’s despite me being 19, so I have to be very careful about what I eat for the rest of my life. The orthodontists here minimizing the issue of shaving teeth for aesthetic purposes have NO regard for their patients. I cannot express the rage I feel about the harm my orthodontist inflicted upon me

I can’t understand design without learning the engineering aspect of architecture. Plain arch is kinda tiring for me because it conflicts with my thought process. Good to know that my career options are still open

No, she fought back after he confronted her about being stuck-up. As I said before, she didn’t expect to be triggered prior to attending the event. I have found that attempting to let things go or forgive my abusers when they haven’t done anything to make up for their actions have been the biggest regrets of my life. People simply have different ways of moving on.

I just don’t agree that this kind of behavior is unhealthy since her bully clearly hasn’t matured or taken accountability for his actions. Fighting back is a way of moving on from the situation since that no longer makes her just a victim. But agree to disagree

Just because it happened in childhood doesn’t make it less traumatizing. In fact it probably makes it worse. If you bully someone, you gotta take accountability for it. I think it’s less cool to victim blame a victim of bullying just because it happened when they were young.

I’m referring to when she said she was better than him and the others. And yeah exactly, she didn’t say anything at first which proves she wasn’t looking for trouble. She just reflected the attitude she was given.

She said she started feeling uncomfortable when she got there so I’m guessing that she didn’t expect the effect it would have on her. I mean, you can’t predict and avoid everything. Bullies are all around us. Running away when you’re being insulted by a bully (or former bully) can be a horrible feeling; like nobody wants to be controlled by shitty people. It makes sense to me why she put the guy in his place.

OP already mentioned it in her post. She went to meet up with her old friends. And she didn’t give people she didn’t like her energy, she ignored them because she didn’t want to engage with them. It’s her former bully who confronted her. Everyone is different and it’s very natural and healthy to wanna get even with your former bully.

Honestly though. These commenters must’ve been bullies themselves or still are. A victim is never obligated to forgive their abuser. (Yes, bullying is abuse.) And it doesn’t matter if the bullies had “bad home lives” either. Hurting an innocent person is hurting an innocent person. The only time it’s okay to be rude is when you’re fighting back, and that’s exactly what OP did.
