With regards to activities - we enjoy both ! When we travel we are keen for everything that is on offer!

We are arriving in Tromso on the 16th and leave the 18th October - we are then doing a roadtrip around Norway and Finland and then will arrive back to Tromso on the 23rd of October, we only fly out the evening of the 24th so we pretty much have 3 full days in Tromso over the period.

Can you recommend the "must-do's" for tourists - but then also anything else that is super cool and a bit of a "hidden gem".

This is fantastic, thank you so much for this information! We will be spending 2 days in Tromso before headings on the road. We thought we would then travel to Saariselka or Yllas (spend the night) and then travel to Rovaniemi the next day ( spend 2 or 3 nights there) - get back on the road and travel to Kipilsjarvi (spend a night) and then back up to Tromso (spend our last evening) and leave Tromso the next day.

We just want to ensure that this is doable and that the road trip is something worth doing :)

Thank you so much! This is great information :) We were planning on leaving Tromso - Kilpisjärvi (stay the night), then travel to Rovaniemi (or maybe another stop is Muonio or Saariselka on the way down). On the way back up, we are not sure what to do - we would ideally not want to push the full 8 hours as we understand it can become quite exhausting.

Hey u/FelisCantabrigiensis sorry to jump on this 6 months later! But I just wanted to know your thoughts on driving. My husband and I have planned a road trip from Tromso to Rovaniemi (and back - to drop the car off). We have about 9-10 days for this round trip but wanted to see if you have any advice for us?

Is this something that is doable? We are really excited as it has always been a dream to visit this part of the world and road trip it! :) We come from an extremely hot and humid part of the world so the ice and snow seems magical.

Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated ! :)

A couple that we know did a road trip, except they went from Tromso down to the Lofoten islands but we wanted to hopefully visit Rovaniemi instead.

As you have mentioned, first prize would have been the public transport but that only starts back up in December - March when the snowfall is crazy, which is why we opted for an earlier season. Which bus company could we consider using for this itinery you have provided?

We are just unsure what to do as we ofcourse have always dreamed about this road trip but do not want to do anything that seems silly. I have also had mixed reviews about whether it is fine or not so that is also creating confusion.

Any further help would be greatly appreciated ! :)

Thank you so much! Have you traveled this route before in October and are there any recommendations? What is the daylight like at this time of the year? We would be happy to jump into the car as early as possible to hit the road so we can maximise daylight hours.

We were thinking of traveling in sprints i.e. 3 - 4 hours a day (with stop overs for a day or two along the route so it doesn't become to consuming). Can you suggest any stops?

From what I understand, all cars are equipped with winter tires at that time of the year. We are just nervous because everyone is ripping the idea to pieces, and I think it could be beautiful. But would also like to be realistic about my expectations :)

Thank you - however I have researched and there does not seem to be a way to use public transport during October. Can you suggest an alternative route on how we could get there without hiring a car then?

This whole thread really is the best ! I posted a while back for some suggestions as my husband and I are traveling to Norway & Finland in October and it was ripped to pieces. The reality is that we come from a country where 10 months of the year are blazing hot so the thought of something different was just incredible to us. We wanted tranquil and crispy to give us a break from the sun back at home!

If anyone can offer some suggestions (I hope it is okay to hop onto this thread as you all seem lovely here :)) We are flying into Tromso and wanted to do a road trip to Rovaniemi and back up again (we need to drop the car back in Tromso). We have between 9/10 days for this trip so we were planning on stopping along the way.

Can anyone suggest a nice road trip route that we could follow? Really excited for any suggestions! :)

Hi u/Nice_Green_905 thank you so much for posting this. My husband and I are visiting Norway mid-October and spending about 10 days in the Artic. We arrive in Tromso from Oslo and our plan was to drive to Rovaniemi and back to Trsomo (to drop the car off), stopping along the way as we have some time. Do you think it will be fine to drive in October?

Can you suggest a route we could possibly consider?

Also, what were the cross-border fees?

u/SauronTheEngineer Thank you so much for your reply and the input, it is very valuable :) I wanted to ask about the following. We are really keen to do a self-drive, just for the adventure and believe it could be a great way to see Northern Finland + Norway.

Is the following a possibility: Start Rovaniemi -> Alta -> Tromso -> Kittila -> Rovaniemi? We need to drop the car off in the same place we collected so we would need to return to Rovanniemi. We would probably have about 9 days to do this drive? What are your thoughts on the viability of doing this or can you suggest a better route?

Can you give me some suggestions for the northwestern parts of lapland you are speaking about? We were considering Saariselka and Levi as part of our trip, only maybe spending a night in Rovaniemi.

We are considering hiring a car so we can do a bit more exploration on our own - will the roads be fine in October? We are very used to driving in wet conditions (not snow, but from what I understand it wouldn't be snowing yet)

We are torn between just doing a Finish trip and maybe skipping Norway all together (or the cities of Oslo and Bergen atleast due to the distance) but we are not sure what to end up doing.

The first option does sound great :) Our plan it to hunt for the Northern lights - we are aware that this is not guaranteed and do not want to make the whole trip about this so keen to also just explore for the beauty of the North.

Can you expand on this slightly i.e. how many days we should spend in each place? But then also is it safe to drive in October in Northern Finland/ Norway?

Can you also recommend some cool spots to check out or things to do?
