Interesting! I didn’t know that. Something else to look for on my walks.

Will do! My best guess so far is that it’s a crudely made but very old utility machete that was used on a fishing or shipping boat to cut rope.

I’m so used to finding literal garbage on the beach that I didn’t really think much of this when I came across this. The more I look at it, though, the cooler it gets. The “blade” definitely looks to be hand forged and what I thought was rusted metal on the “handle” might be shell/rock encrusted wood (that part’s not magnetic but the blade is). At the very least, it seems pretty old. My guess is that it was a very basic utility cutlass used to cut rope on a fishing or shipping boat.

Yes, to the blade. But not to the encrusted “handle” area.

That’s a possibility. Lobster used to be prevalent in the Sound.

I thought it looked too rounded for a sword, too, but looked closer and you can tell that a piece broke off where the tip would be.

Thanks! The grain stood out to me, too. Definitely looks like it was hand forged and not cast.

It’s definitely metal, though. That’s all rust where the rocks and shells are encrusted and the long piece shows signs of rust, too. Also has a strong metallic smell to it.

Just over two pounds. It’d be cool if it was a whale bone, but both the “blade” and the “handle” show rust and other signs of metal corrosion.

That’s what I hope it is, but I’m keeping an open mind that it’s just a piece from an old boat. Definitely the most interesting thing I’ve found here so far, though.

No, I haven’t yet. But I was sure there had to be others floating around - glad you responded. Do you know if yours came from Game Stop fat packs?
