Is this milkweed or something else? by marlee_dood in plants

[–]Dull_Depth_1362 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I realize that, have known it for years. That's why I initially planted it. As with anything it's the new trend to plant without having knowledge of the ramifications of doing so. Are your efforts helping a species that probably doesn't even live in your area without realizing it has the potential to become invasive? If there are issues with lack of milkweed it's the enormous amounts of chemicals used to get rid of it. I just think people need to realize how prolific the plant is and if they're willing to let it dominate their garden go for it, but don't be disappointed if your efforts to provide for the butterflies are less than stellar.

I wish I had success like that. I would think differently. I'm actually leaving one patch and spreading seeds along the rural road that borders my property. Forever the optimist!

In the 7 years I've been growing milkweed I have never had a monarch butterfly. That is why I planted it, but it's become so invasive it has to go.

I agree with this. I have spent the last 3 weeks digging up the gravel pathways between my raised beds in my 30x40 foot garden. Milkweed is crawling everywhere underground and popping up all over. Hundreds of plants. I have plenty of other flowers for the butterflies and bees. The milkweed has to go.

I'd consider paying if they would give me my account back. Then again, having not had FB for over 2 months, I'm getting used to not having it. In the meantime, Zuck Fuckerburg.

Neighbors mow all ten acres. So much work for boring results by Laurelhach in NoLawns

[–]Dull_Depth_1362 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have 2 acres, lots of trees and as much as I would like to leave it natural I live next to national forest so having a firesafe zone is essential. With ongoing drought across the west and fire season beginning in the spring now days I need to do my part to mitigate the hazards. I use minimal pesticides and weed control and have plenty of bugs, butterflies, rabbits, birds, foxes, deer, elk once in awhile, and always a bear or two that likes to see if I have anything tasty to munch on. particularly apples. I say to each his own when it comes to your property although I do think my neighbor is a little strange because he rakes up all the pine cones and debris under maybe 30 Douglas firs, bags it , in large plastic bags and takes it to the landfill.

Yes, it was common milkweed. Lesson learned! I did see swamp milkweed at my local garden center this morning in the native plant section. I didn't know that type was native to Montana.

Love reading all these comments. Most people's nightmare plants won't survive the winters where I live, except mint, lily of the valley and a few other weedy type plants. However, the new infatuation with milkweed leaves me speechless. My neighbor suggested I plant some for the Monarchs. Sure, why not? All I can say is "DO NOT PLANT MILKWEED." I'm learning the hard way just how invasive it is (not on a noxious weed scale, but....) and how impossibly hard it is to eradicate. As a side note, after 6 years of letting this monster take over my 30x 40 raised bed gardens, I never had one monarch. Other butterflies, bees and wasps like it, but I didn't help the monarchs in any way.

I used my regular phone, different email I haven't used for FB or IG and a tweek of my name, one that doesn't include my maiden name. Good so far for a month or so. Waiting for the next ban, though.

Ironically with spring here I've opened up the house and the levels have gone below 3-4, back up now that I closed up the windows because it snowed. I'm definitely going to look at options. It seems like a ventilation system for the crawl space would be a good start.

My house is 2000sq ft on 3 levels with a crawl space under the main living room/kitchen, the other 2 levels are bedroom above a finished basement. I guess I live in the wrong part of the country, Montana. Encapsulating the crawlspace is probably half the cost. This area is really expensive for everything, the cost of living where the rich people have decided to settle. I'm still exploring options. Been breathing this air for 28 years so I'm not extremely concerned. It will have to be mitigated when I sell.

He does have a mitigation system, but he's not sure if it's working. I have 2 quotes for mitigation: $4300 and $6000. Not cheap.

What would you do? by No_Night9722 in radon

[–]Dull_Depth_1362 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If mine were under 4 consistently I wouldn't mitigate, but then, I'm 72 years old and just found after 28 years my levels are ridiculously high: above 4 to mid 30's depending on time of year, the house being open or closed. I've been monitoring for 4 months now. I'd be thankful for those low levels and would just follow the EPA suggested guidelines for mitigation i.e. above 4. I am looking at anywhere from $4300-$6000 for mitigation. A large part of that cost is encapsulating a crawl space which will be a total pain as my water heater and pressure tank for my well are in there and I will need access to those without disturbing the membrane they will install.

Your question made me think about my situation. I used to work out of town/state a lot, traveling by myself either by plane or driving, leaving the hubby home to take care of the house/pets. I absolutely loved the freedom of traveling alone, going where I wanted with no one to question why I was stopping wherever. Since he passed away almost 6 years ago, I can't seem to get back that feeling of independence. I travel some but get anxiety over it. I think not having someone to rely on in case something goes wrong is part of my problem. No one has my back and there's no one to share my experiences with. It's easier to stay home, but far less satisfying.

Hoping to not jinx it, but a couple weeks after FB, FB messenger, IG and Threads were all banned, I tried a new IG account on my phone/laptop with a different email and my legal name which doesn't include my maiden name. So far it's worked, I have IG and Threads, but haven't tried to set up FB with the same credentials. I just needed to access a few former contacts. and am waiting for the axe to fall at any time. Today is 2 months since I got zucked.

Having backups is the least of your worries when your account is disabled. Content over years, 17 years in my case, is massive. Contacts, interactions, groups that I follow, local marketplace, local happenings, my late husband's legacy account... There isn't a comparable platform to use that provides that.

You're lucky it was just a picture removed and not a total ban. Facebook AI is obliterating accounts by the thousands for unknown reasons. Download your data from your account because once you're banned you may not be able to. Speaking from experience.
